do i need to hack my iphone or should i wait? when are they 3rd party apps coming, and do you think we'll see a nes or snes emulator without having to hack?

Or maybe they mean the "fiscal February," which I believe is June.

I hear you.
I'm disappointed in the way Apple is running the show. They really need to get moving.

But you are not the only one fed up with them, Europe is not buying it. And that is sending a clear message to Apple, that they need to start working seriously on this phone.
It is a great looking phone, but it is so far from complete, at it is not yet a smart phone.

And just our luck... Feb 26th is a Tuesday, which is usually one of the days in a week we see software come out. Barring that, there's also Friday, Feb 29, which is just a *special* day this year. Ok. I'm done making up nonsense.

The other thing to note here is that SJ said the Software Developers Kit would be available in late February. Apps based on that SDK will take a little more time; good apps will take even longer.

Uh, it's the fourth day of February. They aren't going to release it the first day of the month. At Macworld they said it will be out in late Feb. As far as a date goes, you can expect it around the 26th.

I'm not a software developer or coder, so I'm not sure how this works. Is it possible to have something almost ready and just be waiting for Apples official SDK to complete it? Realistically, are we waiting days, weeks or months for apps?

I imagine that Apple has already given out a basic SDK to a few select corporations. There could be a few apps out within days or weeks then after it becomes available. But for complex high quality apps, those would probably take a month or two to get out. It is going to be very similar to the switch to Intel as far as timespan I would think. So don't expect anything from Microsoft and Adobe (Flash) for a long time

We'll probably see some simple apps weeks after the release of the SDK. Anything with any level of sophistication will take months to develop. It's possible some companies had advanced access to the SDK but I wouldn't count on it. Programming against a changing SDK is not an efficient use of time.

I promise to have an app out within 24 hours of the release of the SDK. My app may do absolutely nothing practical but there will be at least one available.

I think that Steve's goal is for there to be a few good apps out by WWDC and then get more developers fired up about it then.

No idea yet. Steve hasn't told us. We plan to write iPhone apps since we're Mac users, iPhone users and write software for BlackBerry and Windows Mobile. But right now, our assumption is that its a Cocoa based SDK. It has to be. But we don't actually know. When we start, it'll probably take us a week or two to get our heads around the new SDK since even if its Cocoa based will have some things that are different from the jailbreak SDKs and OS X itself.

The questions you pose simply cannot be answered in any way other than through supposition.

Apple moves slowly and methodically. Thats what makes them different. They would rather release a product done correct (or mostly correct) the first time. Why do you think the iPhone has done so well.

Ask Microsoft what happens when they rush a product. They get Vista.
