I recently (last Thursday) ordered a 16 Gb iPod Touch from AMEX using my membership rewards points. I have yet to receive it. I would like to exchange/upgrade to the 32Gb version.

I seem to recall something before I purchased saying that once removed, the points could not be put back into the account. And AMEX's shopping site does not show the 32Gb and I would imagine they won't have it for some time. So exchanging through AMEX probably isn't an option.

Thankfully, the price didn't drop so I should be able to sell it on ebay or another site for around $360. But then there is the shipping and PayPal fees.

So what about exchanging and upgraded at the local Apple store. It was purchased by me with the intent of my wife "giving" it to me for my birthday later this month. If I were to take it in and say that I received it as a birthday gift but now see that the 32 Gb is available and would like to exchange my unopened 16Gb and pay the difference for a 32 Gb, would they be willing to let me upgrade? Or do they need a receipt even for unopened items?

I don't know, my girlfriend got .mac for christmas from her parents when she got a mac, and she didn't need that, so we tried to take the unopened box back to the apple store (they bought it at compusa and they don't take returns since they're going out of business)... Apple said sorry but there was nothing they can do without a receipt.

The policy could be different for hardware rather than software though.
