I'm posting here and not the hardware because I wanted the opinions of designers, not hardware people.

Anyone have preferences on a 19" or larger monitor under $500? I'm getting a new Mac after Macworld and will be using it for at least 4 years while I get my MA in Graphic Design. I wanted to invest in a good monitor, but I only have $500 to spend on it.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks.

For color accuracy my vote still goes for the Lacie Electron Blue 19" ($360) or the 22"($700). I personally like the real estate of the 22 but it looks to be out of your price range.
I have unexpectedly quit.

My suggestion is get the largest screen you can afford. As a designer, you'll appreciate the screen size more than anything else.

I really like my 19" Samsung Multisync. The clarity is sweet, the colors vibrant, although I have not had it long enough to do much testing with accuracy to printing. The reds seem a little hot, but I typically do my color correcting by numbers. But the price was/is right.

Soo... hope that helps, although I would definitedly get as big as you can or make sure you have enough computer slots to add a video card and extra monitor later for pallets which eat up so much realestate. I have an old CRT hooked up for that purpose.

Good Luck!

I did a little research. I think NEC makes the CRT for LaCie.

I found this:

NEC MultiSync FP2141SB (Black) 22 in for $560 + tax & shipping.

What about this monitor?

It's gotten 5 out of 5 stars from 23 reviews so far, and the specs look impressive for only $390. At $400 I could buy a nifty color calibration kit for it.
