Look for Helvetica Fractions. It is evil. Exorcise it.

Careful now! Helvetica is a necessary font for many apps. It was only Helvetica Fractions that caused bizarre displays in Safari, Mail, etc. You need to go here:
Mac OS X 10.4: Fonts list
and see if there are any problems with your System fonts.
Booting with the Shift key down will flush fonts caches, which mayb help.

You can find out what font it is like this:

1. Select some text.
2. Copy it.
3. Paste it into a TextEdit document.
4. Select it there.
5. From the ‘Format’ menu, choose ‘Font’, then ‘Style…’.

TextEdit will tell you what font it is.

no man...you need the helvetica, you shouldnt erase it!!! its just that you have a crap version of it working when it shouldn't, whether its the helvetica fractions or not you need to keep the default helvetica fonts active to keep more issues from coming up. maybe an archive and install is in order for you if you've already trashed your fonts
