My first generation G5 iMac is fairly easy to open. A few screws on the bottom, and the back pops off.

I can't find instructions on opening the new 24" iMac. I'm about to buy one, and I'm wondering if it will be easy enough for me to open it up and replace the hard drive, or if I should just do BTO and buy the bigger drive from Apple. Anybody know where to find instructions on opening the new iMac, and is the hard drive easy to replace?

The new iMac's (iSight) are not nearly as user friendly for upgrades where the whole back panel comes off and you can get to all the various parts. It's now a mess to take apart. It doesn't take much skill just a lot of time, but I think it may void apples warranty. Your best bet is to BTO.

I don't think any iMacs after the first generation G5 can be opened. I don't know why Apple stopped this, but they did.

Did the G5 iMac's have that little panel to upgrade the RAM, or did you take the back off?

The original G5 iMacs you could take the back off, when they went to the iSight G5 iMacs it was a little panel.

It can be opened. Just wait until one actually ships.
