Hi,

I was able to auction an IBM Thinkpad (for my sister) rather cheap on ebay. I looked through the sellers feedback and he is renowned for not sending items out when the price is relatively low. Is there anything I can do to force this guy to send me the computer, or anything else I can do. He hasn't answered my emails for 2 days. Thanks.

Did you pay with PayPal? Can you retract your payment? After enough complaints on eBay his account would have to get axed.

As long as you paid through Paypal you can file a claim. Or, if you paid via CC, you can file a claim with the CC company to get the money back. If not, you might be SOL.

I think a Paypal dispute can't be filed until 30 days has passed, hopefully he's just on vacation and not trying to shaft you, good luck!

Oh my bad, i didn't explain myself well enough. I didn't pay yet. I am just asking since I want that laptop because I think I got it at an exceptional price.

Don't be greedy - if it sounds too good to be true, it most likely is.

I don't see the point.

The feedback ratings already tell him that the seller is not reliable.
Why take chances ?

On eBay, I would only deal with those that have impeccable ratings, because even among those, there are scammers. If someone is KNOWN to be unreliable, you take a huge gamble.

I would call him and talk to him and find out if the item is legitimate.

Also, I wouldn't use Paypal to pay him, only a United States Postal Service money order that he has to sign for to receive. If he doesn't send the item or it is significantly different than what the item is, then he can file a fraud report or Lost or Stolen Money Order form through USPS and get his funds back 100%. Paypal is not always so reliable. Somehow scamming the feds is a "Bigger Deal" than scamming Paypal.

How do you determine that from talking to him ?
Words are cheap. He might sweet-talk you.

His bad ratings speak volumes and are a MUCH better gauge to estimate his reliability.

WHY even mess with that ?

Yes, people get greedy and like to get a great deal.
Forget it. Great deals on eBay are mostly gone.

If it's too good to be true, it definitely IS on eBay.

That's why millions of people love eBay and use it every day without a problem. Including me with over 2500 positive feedbacks and never been scammed once from buying over 2000 items in 8 years.

Well, like it or not, I think your advice is flawed.

You place MORE trust in calling a person than the feedback that person received from past transactions.

From a logical standpoint, it doesn't make sense.

BTW, it DOES make a huge difference what you are buying. On small $ items, you rarely get scammed, scammers use those items to build up their reputation.

On bigger ticket items, however, things look differently. Dude is trying to buy a Thinkpad, not the cheapest of laptop brands. I'd be more carful about that than buying a CD or book.
