A while ago I saw a 10-day trial of Word from Office V. X kicking abour and I was wondering if anyone knows where I can download a copy? I got sent some files I need to open and I don't have Office yet (no spare cash) yet I need to read these files. Also does anyone know of any Excel trials?

The test drive of Word has long since expired. There is no demo of Excel. If you need to read Word files, open them in AppleWorks. Or you can convert them to a different file format using Mac Link Plus.

M$ should really be required to provide a free reader for its ubiquitous formats, just as Adobe voluntarily provides the free Acrobat reader.

One speculates that there might be Word test drives floating around the networks of ill repute, such as Hotline and Carracho. Since this was a Test Drive freely available for download, I cannot imagine that there would be anything wrong with its continued availability for download through other channels. Well, I can imagine it, but it would still be wrong...

On a wholly unrelated note , the expiration of a dated program is, of course, related to the system clock managed by the Date/Time preferences.

and also, my experience is that while the MacLink M$ filters (including the ones in Appleworks) work OK for simple documents, more heavily formatted (tables, outline numbering, etc.) documents do not translate as well.

Incidentally, if your lack of cash for Office is related to being a student, there is an educational discount available. I think the price for the full suite is then about $200 US... Check the Apple Store online. There is an "Education" link up at the top of the page.
