Washington: The discovery of a pair of socks with traces of explosives in them has prompted a US government warning that al-Qaida may still be planning to use personal items to blow up a plane.

The Department of Homeland Security issued its warning Wednesday after being tipped off about a pair of suspicious socks. The FBI issued a similar warning on the same day as part of its weekly bulletin to law enforcement agencies.

"There is not intelligence that indicates al-Qaeda is involved in a plot to blow up a plane, this is an example of when we've learned about a potential al-Qaeda tactic, we passed them on and we do this on a regular basis," Brian Roehrkasse, a department spokesman, told AFP.

"We had information about potentially somebody using a sock, we don't know what specifically it would be used for, however, it was prudent for us to put that information out to the security professionals," Roehrkasse said.

He declined to say where the sock tip had originated. "The source was classified, so I can't get into those details."

However, ABC News reported yesterday that the British authorities were examining a pair of blue socks, which reportedly contained the "components" of an explosive device that could be used to strike an airliner.

Britain arrested Sajid Badat, 24, last week on suspicions of terrorism. Badat has been charged with conspiring with so-called "shoe bomber" Richard Reid, who attempted to blow up a commercial airliner.

The warning was issued to local and state authorities, as well as airlines.

The department warned earlier this year about the possible use of personal electronic items as potential bombs.

Police ask you to be on the lookout for suspicious socks.

Grrrrrrr!

It's the explosive underwear I'm worried about.

I swear, officer, it's nothing but Tinactin foot powder! No! Not the cavity search!

*shudders*

I'm genuinely worried about that...

I'm wondering how to handle it. The powder is already all over inside of my shoes, and there's no way to get rid of it between now and when I fly two weeks from now. Bringing the foot powder container along with me would probably only make the situation worse ("Punk's got enough of the $hit to cut the plane in half!" - no, the bottle isn't that big, but never underestimate the reactions of someone on a power trip).

*hmmm*

explosive socks? that's nonsense. put socks into shoes packed with explosive materials and they will show traces of explosives.
