Is this only some more popular songs or all of them?
Regardless, these main record labels are shooting themselves in the foot, piracy is going to creep back up and the iTMS is going to suffer.

I have to assume that SteveO thought about the consequences of this move and decided the risk is worth it so I guess we'll wait and see.

It may not be a whole lot of money but those with less than honerable intentions who were trying to do the right thing are definitely not going to be reluctant to steal again now.

THis is a really stupid move on the part of the record labels. Apple really didnt have much of a choice as I see it. Either lose the main five labels or increase the price and sacrifice the success of the iTMS for sure.

If this is about the record companies planning on changing the price, then that is old news.

If this is about some songs actually selling for $1.25, then please provide a link to an example.

Exactly, there has only been "talk" of this happening...nothing has happened yet...

the major labels are raising their price, and apple is following suit; not steve's fault (altho the one-button mouse IS...)

business as usual for the record companies!

It's gotta be Anti-Apple speculation, at least I'm hoping so.

Since when does uncorroborated speculation from the NYP classify as fact?

Even if it happens, it will happen on all music services, not just iTMS.

Apple created the price of 99 a song, and the labels agreed to it. So, I highly doubt that the labels can just up and change the price without Apple's approval, and I doubt Apple would approve of that price change.

So if this does indeed happen, you can bet that when the sales of legally downloaded music declines, and piracy increases, the record labels will shout, "See?? Legal downloading services don't work!!"

There are few things in this world that I despise more than record labels.

No. Walmart's music is for PCs only, and it's WMA, not MP3.

Don't buy that garbage. And Walmart is evil.... they kill small businesses in every town they show up. Soon, we will only have Walmart to shop at, and all the good ma and pa places will be out of business.

The New York Post has some AWFUL sources on this one. The worst part is that other journalists used the New York Post as source material, quoted it and then everyone picks up on this "bad news." (Two senses of the meaning - One: $1.25 would be bad for users, Two: This is actually wrong, according to Apple.)

How did it come to this? Goodbye PowerPC. | sensory output
