are there any mac applications or converters that'll allow me to open a 3ds max ".max" file?

In all honest I have no clue when it comes to anything 3D but Rhino is porting its flagship app to OS X dubbing it Rhino OS X, you can download a beta right now and give it a try, I guess it is not going to hurt…

Milkshape with gmax [ download]
Most OSX 3D app will let you open .3DS files (Cinema 4D, Blender) just not .MAX. You have to use a converter. If working cross platform DXF files might be the best option as all 3D apps will read those no matter what.
