Good deal! Thanks!

It didn't come up in the aggregate search I did, so I moved on.

It just seemed bizarre it wasn't available at all.

If you can expand in a non-spoilery way, I'd appreciate it. Moreso because I intend to rope someone else in and don't want to do them wrong.

Yours is the first bad comment I've heard about it.

It's been years, but from I can remember, it has trouble deciding what movie it should be, and becomes a rather forgettable action movie in the end.

The newer Dredd with Karl Urban? It's bloody fantastic. The old one with Stallone? Meh.

It looks fantastic, but they tried to shoehorn 20+ years of JD comic stories into 2 hours (and even threw in an ABC Warrior from a totally unrelated 2000AD strip), then they pandered to some idiot producer and Stallone not wanting to keep the helmet on or not have a love interest. We're lucky they didn't write in a talking dog sidekick tbh. But the sets and costumes are really great, if a bit too clean.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

@P and Doc HM,

Are you both talking about the one with Karl Urban?

There's a Judge Dredd with Karl Urban?

Checking out IMDB, I may have possibly seen mention of that, but I had completely forgotten about it. I was speaking about the Stallone movie. Also, the Karl Urban movie is just Dredd. Insert The Social Network joke here.

Okay, good.

Your description definitely sounded like the Stallone movie, and was way off from everything I'd heard about the new one.

I find the most interesting thing about JD was the Land Rover taxi designs. I remember seeing the original props on a visit to Pinewood studios for work. Awesome. But the really interesting bit is that the junior designers tasked with designing taxi's for a dystopian future are now more senior and you can see the design cues in the current model range. Interesting that design for a post apocalyptic society is now being used in over bloated 4x4s used to ferry children 200 yards to school and back without contamination by the outside world.

oh, and Hardware, based on an old Future Shocks episode from 200AD was a much better film. What ever happened to Richard Stanley? I used to sit next to his sister at work in Cape Town.

I felt let down by Hardware. While it had good bits, I remember most of it being pretty schlocky.

That wasn't out of character for movies of that era, many of which I enjoyed, but for whatever reason, with this one I was hoping for more.

As far as Judge Dredd goes, you were talking about the Stallone version?

Well, to address your preretrodiction, I did want those two hours back, and despite the problems I had with Hardware, I would definitely recommend it over the Stallone movie.

I'm testing with Pitch Black. I have a soft spot for Vin.

Act two was good. Not quite as tight as the first act, but when it worked, it was firing on all cylinders. I'm entertained.

Is business. It was a great movie. Probably the best comic book adaption on celluloid. It just didn't make enough money. Dread (proper Dredd) is just never going to be mainstream enough. Just thank the gods we at least got this one great movie.

As for Pitch Black, act three... kinda falls apart, but not in a way which wrecked the experience for me or anything. Most of the ideas were good, even if the execution was lacking. I'd say the movie would have greatly benefited from the monsters being a subtler threat.

Its short sighted though. Its not quite as unforgivable as when they cancel a good TV show based on the local advertising revenue alone without factoring international sales, DVDs, downloads and merchandise etc or reviewing the costs, but its still a waste of their huge investment.

They broke even with Dredd because it sold very very well on DVD. It topped the Amazon chart for a while. Which means they built a following for it having broken even without any advertising investment at all.

Then instead of making a second they gave up and sold all the props. It really needed a bigger show of faith. Rather than making one more movie for $45m, I would have made 3 or 4 for $100m. All at once. Crew, equipment and set rental all benefits from bulk discounts for more work, props can be reused, a bit of clever scripting and some really good planners and you can shoot scenes from the 4th movie alongside the scene from the 1st one where the script allows.

I know some franchises fear over saturation (Marvel), but I think with a single decent property like Dredd its more about sustaining interest as long as possible. If you let things drift people move on. Look at how the first X Files movie was years too late to capitalise on the ludicrous popularity of that show. Timing matters. you need to keep dropping new content and a nice pace and the pace is quicker than the time it makes to make another movie completely from scratch.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

The thing is, I was really impressed with what they were able to do with the budget for the first 2/3rds of the movie. It wasn't until they had to build a canyon set instead of using a real canyon that I began wishing they had more money.

I'd only heard people rip it for the implausible parts.

I guess I'm screwed then... a big reason I chose it was because I want to see Chronicles, but felt I should start at the beginning.

Which one has katee sackhoff in it? Ah, IMDB says that was Riddick. I liked that one until about the last 10 minutes, where the sudden "romance" seemed wayyy unnecessary and out of place.

I did not know Vin Diesel voiced the Iron Giant. Huh.

Are there any horror(ish) movies you like? Not challenging your tastes, just trying to get a bead on them.

I'm not really a horror fan, but there's a certain strain of semi-comedy horror I enjoy.

My top two are Evil Dead II, and whichever zombie movie is the one with Clu Gallagher.

Edit: Return of the Living Dead... BRAIIIIIINS!

Edit 2: you can throw the original Dawn of the Dead in there too, but I consider that satire.

I never saw it... too many people bitched about it not being NC-17. The OTT violence in Evil Dead II was a large part of what made it great.

Do you like John Carpenter? Now that I think about it, The Thing is really good, and Prince of Darkness goes up as my example of a movie which is 80% the best movie ever, and 20% really bad.

The final hat I'll throw in the ring is Tetsuo: The Iron Man. Not comedy at all, and most definitely in X-rated for violence territory. It's body horror though rather than regular horror.

It's excellent, but you'll want to take a shower afterwards.
