Hi,
I have an old one of these -- it was running Mac OS 8.1 but I screwed it.
A couple questions:
1) How can I force it to boot from CD so I can run the installer?
2) Could this thing run OS 9.1 or is it dead before that? Trying to decide whether to fix it up and give it away or to just chuck it in the rubbish bin.

Just restart with the CD inserted and hold down the C key.
2) Could this thing run OS 9.1 or is it dead before that?
Officially it only supports up to OS 8.x, but OS 9.1 will work fine, provided you give it enough RAM.

 That doesn't seem to work... I tried with C down, with command-C down, with option-C down, with control-option-command-escape down, and with the mouse down. Nothing works.
I may just chuck her in the trash. I don't have use for it, and I was gonna give it to a friend but if it takes me 6 hours to get up and running it's easier to just chuck it

I have a Performa 6400/180. it runs OS 8.6 very well. 9.1 shouldn;t be a problem but don;t quote me on that.

Holding down the C key down doesn't work on PowerTowers
Try this, HOLD down the Command, Option, Shift, and Delete keys on the keyboard all at the same time, to start from the CD.

Does this make the computer ignore internal drives just at startup or for the duration of using the computer?

Don't throw it out!
That is a very desirable machine, since it's easily upgradeable and has built-in SCSI and plentiful PCI.
