Apologies up front. I asked a similar question last year...lost the answer.

I am considering getting Apple care for the remainder of my PBs useful life... 1GHz with SD

1. Thoughts on the sense of doing this?

2. Where is the cheapest / legit place I can buy this "service" plan?

Thanks!

1. A good idea, either through Applecare or some other insurance carrier, like Safeware. YMMV.

2. Just do some web searches...NewEgg had a sale on enrollment packs a while ago.

I would DEFINITELY do it. The tibooks are great machines, but they are also a little delicate. It is worth it. Safeware is insurance for your laptop for accidental damage or loss. Applecare is for natural failures that occurs. They are different. Check them out before you decide...

You should absolutely get it. Mine is 1.5 years old - and I've already taken advantage of the apple care twice. First, the hinges broke. Apple replaced the entire LCD. Second, my power adaptor melted down.

Unless you are planning on buying a G5 the second they come out, you will probably want to get as much mileage out of your Ti as possible. The Apple Care will let you do it.

There is no doubt that you should do this. I wouldn't even buy a Apple laptop without AppleCare. Repairs cost an arm and a leg. My old 800mhz PowerBook G4 had to have the logic board and hinge replaced. It cost $990!!! Luckily this happened a month before the 1 year warrenty ran out. I sold it and bought a 1ghz TiBook with AppleCare.

I just about a 1.25 AlBook yesterday and also purchased AppleCare. If you know someone who is a student (or if you are), you can get it for about $250. That is about what I paid for mine with a student discount.

Do I need a special version of the Applecare??? Will the one labled for "Powerbook" be sufficient? I saw one on Pricegrabber.com for M8853LLA for $262... Is this the one I want? I have had the PB for a little over a year...still plan on getting a G5 at some point. I just ordered a 20" Cinema Display for now.

Both smalldog.com and expercom.com usually offer some sort of discount on applecare (the offerings vary.)

You may never have to use the applecare, but it's worth having for the peace of mind.

One of the best things you can get for the Ti is a Cyber3 handle. You'd be surprised at how many people drop their laptop because the surface is so slippery. The handle also reinforces the hinges and provides cooliing benefits by raising up the back of the laptop (allows air circulation.)
