hope this is the right forum...

have a 1-month old 12" revC powerbook, 10.3.4.
decided to run first aid, repair permissions.

i tried to boot from my 10.3 cd and froze at startup. (bought panther a while ago for my older powerbook)

so i tried to boot from techtool pro (4.0.2) and...same freeze.

tried to boot from diskwarrior 3.0.2, and got an immediate kernal panic (tried twice)

booted fine from the cd that came with the powerbook, so i am wondering...
does the AlBook need a special cd to boot from?

and does that mean i can't run techtool or diskwarrior?

hmmmm.......

It's no mystery.

As always: no Mac (well, all but a VERY few models) won't boot any Mac OS earlier than the one the model initially shipped with.

The latest PowerBooks require, I think, 10.3.2 or 10.3.3. You can't boot them with anything earlier than that.

So you'll have to get updated DiskWarrior and TechTool CDs. There is no reason for you to install from the Panther retail CDs, since the DVD installer takes less time to run.

You can make you own boot CD and put disk warrior on it.

lots of ways to do it:

Boot CD is the solution. It rocks.

If you can afford it, what you should look at getting is a back-up Firewire disk. You can clone your enire drive to it, and boot from it at any time to run utilities, or to clone the disk back in case of a system corruption.

This one looks like a pretty good deal:

I've typically seen BootCD require 1/2 hour to boot. While it works, it's not been a viable solution for me.

Yes, it takes the utility manufacturers a little while to make updated discs. Sorry.

actually...
installed (from my powerbook dvd), 10.3.3 on an external firewire drive.
installed techtool & diskwarrior on that drive,
booted from it, and ran techtool from there.

worked!

thanks all for ideas

Yes, that's a good method. There's nothing wrong with the utilities: they just don't have the necessary version of Mac OS installed.

I have run into this problem also. I have tried using BootCD. I can boot up from it but DiskWarrior 3.0.2 won't run. It runs through the full check but won't let me view the changed drive/directory. Do I need to do something special to get DW to work on BootCD?

So I thought about installing Panther on the FW disk I have. Problem is, both partitions show up as not acceptable targets for the install. Do I need something other than the install disks that came with my powerbook? Do I need to use a fresh/virgin partition? I hadn't wiped either partition so maybe that was it?

Help would be appreciated.
