I haven't touched classic... let alone OS 9 in YEARS. The only thing I will miss is Shuffle Puck Cafe.

It's funny, I only came to Macs with the Public Beta- I had used NeXT Machines, but was never able to afford one.. I loved Linux, and I OS X seemed the next step.

I don't think I used a single Classic application from 2000 through 2006.. But I've started using them now. I've bought some second-hand copies of old-mac games, from the 1993 era, and they're far more fun than they ought to be.

For someone who never played many Games, it's great to be able to play them now, on my powerbook, and experience the way the games played on a Mac in the past.

I'll move to a MacBook at some point- BootCamp and Native Speed virtualization are too tempting to pass up, but I'm strongly hoping that we'll see a revival of classic by a third party, such as vMac

An emulator might be the best solution- It's slightly frustrating that Apple didn't include one. Granted, it would run slowly, but as a solution to the games of yesteryear, it might be enough..

Adobe Type Manager. But I've been missing that since 2002, when I went OS X only – 4 YEARS AGO!!

Adobe Pagemill....simple and easy for the small website that I have. I switched to an intel iMac (still have my old PB tho) so I don't know what I'm gonna do now to update the website. I looked at Dreamweaver but there's no way I need something so advanced. I don't like iWeb, so I think I may be SOL.

Yeah only old games will be missed.

I used to love playing Rune. However, now we will have dual booting I imagine those old games can be bought very cheaply and run in Windows.

I had one piece of software that i had to run for some colleg class that was classic only. I don't use that anymore, and since i finished Monkey Island, i have no use for classic.

Haven't had it installed on my powerbooks for about two years.

ResCompare
An old copy of StuffIt Deluxe, for the occasional time when I want to send files to OS 9 users (and I'd rather not pay for an upgrade to this - Allume pisses me off lately)

Tons of old games.

In addition, my dad has to run an app in Classic for which the Mac version has been out of development for years for his business - he can never upgrade to an Intel Mac unless I can figure out why I can't get the Windows version to work in WINE (rebooting constantly is out, so Boot Camp isn't an option).

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Funny thing is I haven't used Classic in so long I can't remember the last time. Heck, I don't even have it on my year old PowerBook and haven't noticed.

Was looking at a friends powerbook last weekend, and saw he still had a classic folder on there. When I got my 1.33Ghz powerbook, I immediately nuked paved and put a fresh and clean install of OSX on there (saving myself a few GBs of crap in the process, natch). I laughed when I saw it. He didn't really care as he's a bit more casual than I am (and I'm pretty fricking casual).

Anyway, no. I miss nothing about OS9. Cipher, chime in on this one, he-who-carried-the-OS9-torch-for-so-damned-long.

My dad has an iMac G5. He still insists on using classic, for a few applications. He still uses Word version 5.1, even though we have Office X. He does math equations and says they changed the keystrokes, or something, and he doesn't want to have to relearn.

He also insists on using SuperPaint. He also plays the first-person shooter "Marathon" alot, along with alot of third-party scenarios.

I try to get him off classic, but he won't budge...

I don't think I've used Classic since MS Office v. X was released (and even then, I managed to, uh, find beta versions prior to retail release).

I dearly love and miss OS9, to this day; I bought a 900MHz iBook G3 because it was one of the last machines that would natively boot OS9. I still play Total Annihilation and UT on that machine in OS9, and still boot it into OS9 occasionally to screw around (and hell, the battery life is longer under OS9).

I also just got a PowerMac 8500 that runs OS9, and my router is an iBook 500 (no screen) running OS9

It was a great system

BTW, as an aside; how right was I about x86 OS X? (I hadn't made a told-you-so post yet in OS X General)

Unreal Tournament - the original one, and I believe, the best one. The one that had not that funny anime look, the one which was about a lethal tournament and had all the atmosphere of it. Newer versions suck so much, there is no way I am going to play them. Aside from that, not much really.

SheepShaver is a buggy, difficult-to-use-and-set-up piece of crap. That's the problem.

Heck, you can't even get the thing running without having an existing way to run Classic apps, because you need TomeViewer to extract the Mac OS ROM file that's needed to get SheepShaver to work.

Ha! Ha! I do remember CC and Casady & Greene (R.I.P.) When I moved to Mac OS X, I wondered where the extensions were. But miss messing with them and adjusting memory for each app.? Not really. I'd say a few games I miss. And I miss Classic in a nostalgic way, sure, though I don't think Mac OS 9 was the cleanest or classiest version of Classic.

I think most people on this board moved to Mac OS X years ago. But, remember that doesn't represent all, or maybe even most, Mac users.

The only thing I do somewhat miss about Classic was its GUI consistency and the spatial Finder. We seem to have lost and somewhat discarded those features as if they were useless, in Mac OS X, and it's a shame. Also, we didn't rely on file name extensions which I think is an embarrassing leap backwards, but what can one do?

I used to rely on more third-party apps in the Classic age than I do now. That's probably a combination of how both Apple and my computing habits have changed over time.

I miss the Pro-Pinball games.
"The Web" and "Timewarp"

Have them both. Rarely get to play either.

I see they still make the game

But for XBox only

The topic is about missing the ability to run OS 9 apps via the Classic environment on an Intel Mac, not about missing OS 9.

You know, I'm glad someone realizes this. It seems that a lot of people have been pushing for Classic to DIE DIE DIIEEEEEEEEE!!! on here lately.

Now that they're getting their wish here, next thing you know they'll be trying to get Apple to remove the Rosetta emulation layer. After that, CFM support. Maybe they'll try to get Apple to discontinue Carbon completely...

Yes, if I ever get an intel Mac, I am going to miss the old Mac OS.

Unlike other people I know, I don't like bashing Mac OS 9 and previous versions just because we have a better OS now. Every generation has its heroes, Mac OS X now, System 7 then; intel CPUs now, 68K & PowerPC then… such fact doesn't give us a legitime right to cast into oblivion past heroes that easily.

In the same way people enjoy and love 'classic' cars why can not we enjoy and love 'classic' OS nowadays?. So, those guys still creating stuff I can run under my old Mac OS 9, those are my heroes.

Please, don't get me wrong, I really like Mac OS X, sure I do.

P.S. Oh, I wish I have those Pro Pinball games, never got them in my country though…

As much as I loved OS9 when it was the only thing for me, I sure will miss the memory leaks, the 3+ restarts a day and the amazing multitasking.
