Hi,
I'm thinking of selling my Power Mac G5. I was wondering what you guys would think is a good price for this machine. It's in great condition, dual 2.7GHz, 3GB RAM, 6800 Ultra with NV5 silencer, 400GB drive and 2 years of applecare left on it.
Thanks.

$1500? Haha...
If you're going the eBay route, count on something closer to $2200-2400. I sold my Dual 2.5 last month on eBay for $2500.

Based on what you sold yours for Lateralus, I think I could get about 2500 also...maybe 2700 if I'm lucky. Reasoning: Dual 2.7 > 2.5, 3GB<4GB, 400GB<500GB and 6800U ~ x800xt, so I think the harddrive and RAM you had kind of cancels out the benefits in processor speed. What do you think?

One thing about eBay you need to understand is that you need to talk up whatever it is that you're selling. Putting a pretty lengthy description of your item up gives the impression than it's something you actually know and care about. And people prefer buying items from those kinds of people. Odd as it seems.
You can compare two identical machines from two different sellers. One being sold by a high-volume reseller with little to no description and the other being sold personally, with a nice description. Nine times out of ten the one being sold personally with the description will end at a higher price.
Pictures are just as important. The more pictures the merrier.
One suggestion also; Probably the only reason I got as much for my machine as I did was because I sold the Radeon off seperately. I suggest you do the same. Mac people tend to bid less because of the included video card than they do for the CPU, RAM and hard drive space. Pick up an older Radeon 9600 XT or thereabouts and include that with the machine instead. Stepping down to it from the 6800 wont affect the final auction price anywhere near as much as you'd think and it'll allow you to sell the 6800 U for a pretty penny in its own auction. I sold one several months back for $425.
I'm still sticking to my guns on the $2200-2400 estimate though. I seem to have special luck on eBay; I got much more for my machine than similarly equipped machines were going for at the time.

You're probably right the G5s I looked at for $1500 didn't have a lot of RAM and HD space.

It was a while ago, a couple months at least when I was looking for a Mac for editing with my friend. I don't have a link anymore. Sorry.

I find the hardest thing about selling a PM on ebay is actually shipping the damn thing! (My Mum seems to have "lost" my G5 box...)
|
I free'd my mind... now it won't come back.

Why do you sell? I mean if you are in need of money, it is good. If you have 2 computers and wanting to get rid of one, good.
If you sell for latest Steve Jobs fanboy Intel propaganda: Wrong.
The G5 is a great workstation/home computer and will work for years without any problems.
I had G5 1600, I moved to Quad G5 recently. I really don't give a heck to Intel. It won't change for a long time.

The easiest way to determine prices is to search completed ebay auctions. This is far more accurate than someone guessing on a forum.

If you're serious about selling your PowerMacs, I would sell them before the new Intel PowerMacs (Mac Pro?) come out as I'm sure you already know.
|
MacBook Pro | 2.16 Ghz CD | 100 Gb HD | 2 Gb RAM | 10.4
iBook Clamshell | 466 Mhz | 60 Gb HD | 576 Mb RAM | 10.4

Well I sold mine! It went fast too, maybe I should ahve asked for more money.
I got $1825USD for a Dual 2Ghz G5, 2.5Gig RAM and 500GIG HD...
A good price I think, for a 2 - 3yr old computer...
Now I'm Mac-less for the first time in 11years - tiem to wait for the Merom MBPs
Mac-less - boo

That is what I plan to do, hoping that they come around WWDC or sometime around that.
