I just installed a 500gb SATAII seagate 7200.11 drive into my dual 2.8ghz mac pro running leopard 10.5.2

there is already a 500GB seagate 7200.10 drive in bay 1 that came from apple when i got the computer.

I watched all the videos, read all the manuals and installed it. I start the computer, it doesn't show up, i reset the computer, nothing. I reset the PRAM, nothing. i moved it to bay 3 instead of 2, nothing.

any help?

nope, nothing. Makes me thing i installed it wrong, but it's really not hard to install. I pulled it out and clicked it back in, did the same with the main drive in bay 1

could it be a bad drive?

i also notice a slow paced clicking noise for about 10-12 clicks when the machine boots up.

im guessing the brand new hard drive is bad, any other thoughts?

Does it show up in System Profiler?

If you pull the original drive out, does the clicking continue and does it sound repetitive?

New drives should just plug-and-play. Sounds like a bad drive, but even if it is not I would immediately RMA it for another unit from the vendor. Just in case...

"SATA II" was the name of a committee. It means nothing in the context of hard drives.

Sounds like a bad drive to me.

Just like Kenneth said.. look into disk utility if it appears there. You have to format it first in order to appear on the desktop.
Also if that doesn't work, you can borrow a hard disk external case/USB and connect it to a PC and check if it appears.

You don't have to set master/slave jumpers on SATA drives? Right?

I was just thinking that you might want to check that the drive is jumper'd properly.

Did you remove the SATA jumper from the back? Might be worth a check. Otherwise, probably a dead drive. RMA to the rescue!

Correct. SATA does not need any type of jumpers to configure how it attaches to the system, even when used with a port multiplier to add multiple drives to a single SATA port.
