Nope, not ever on purpose. I have downloades a file or two that turned out to be something other than what I was expecting (when looking for 30 second samples, beware of long downloads!), but as soon as I figured out what I had I deleted them.

There. How's that for honest? I goofed, but I fixed it.

NEXT!

songs sometimes, but I prefer to pay, really. Only if I wanted to hear something right off, like say an old dumb song spur of the moment. Never albums, or movies or such though. Despite my thoughts on movie/cd prices, the artists are still entitled to their $ and the download prices are very reasonable.

Yep.
I download stuff which I can't buy because it's out of print or too obscure for anyone to bother releasing.
Been inclined to wander... off the beaten track.

The only stuff I ever kept were songs that never made it to CD, but I have on vinyl. Some nice people transferred them back in the Napster days.

I have 94 mp3s in my library of 2000+ songs. Half of those at least are from artists sites or songs the bands said to get off file sharing networks. The rest, is generally unreleased stuff or demo stuff from bands that later got big. Two albums on there are by All Star United because they're not on iTunes and I don't even know how I'd get those. As well another is an album by a band that broke up back in 95 with a now defunct label.
My music is 96% paid for and the rest of it I have no way of paying.

All my software is also paid for if it is supposed to be.

What does "keeped" mean?

I have never downloaded a pirate item and obviously never KEPT any.

This is a computer-generated message and needs no signature.

Yes, but for every illegal song in my library, I have 100 legal ones.

I only get the odd goofy single or old song via illegal methods. I try not to make a habit of it. In truth, file sharing and the mp3 revolution has led me to purchase more music then ever before.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

I downloaded a bunch of TV shows a year and a half ago when bittorrent was still kind of new, and before it was officially illegal.

Yes. Movies, TV Shows, and Music.

But - only when it can't be purchased easily (read: while sitting at home in front of my computer - if Amazon has it, I buy it)

How do you think I caught up with BSG before the DVDs came out?

It depends on what you mean by "pirate." I have no problem keeping files of things that I could not feasibly buy (like out-of-print foreign CDs), so if you consider that to be piracy, yes.

Not always feasible either, though. You try getting your hands on a CD that was only released in 500 copies in Wales 12 years ago. It's not easy.

Trust me, I know. I bought a record on eBay this year for ¢5 and the shipping was ¢24.

I'd be the last one to claim that downloading is bad or anything, by MP3 library speaks for itself. However, I just don't buy most of the excuses or justifications most people claim to stand behind when they do it.

Personally, I do it because I can, in the same way that I've taped others' records in the past, and will continue to do so in the future.

I tried finding several CDs of albums over the years. No luck. Either eBay is hideously overpriced, or there are none available. I'll stick to the vinyl rips.

Most of the stuff I can't buy online or through new CDs I can get from used CD stores (which makes the RIAA twitch pretty badly-what a plus!). The stuff I can't get that way, I pretty much already own an analog copy of (Attention Berke Breathed: WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO GET "A WISH FOR WINGS THAT WORK" RELEASED ON DVD?!?!), so I'm pretty well covered. Plus I have an 18 year old in the house, so I've had to be pretty scrupulous to "set the example" for him. It's worked pretty well so far.

Um... I have about 3800 songs on my iPod currently, from various sources... and I've had a DVD burner for quite some time now. Most if not all of the stuff that I actually listen to is purchased legally, but I have a ton of junk that I got from friends that probably needs to be deleted sometime soon (probably over xmas when I put a fresh install of 10.4 on my powerbook). Software wise, I'm a college student and you can't really argue with edu prices. I've definitely downloaded software illegally to try out. If I like it/find it useful I have no problem paying for it. If I don't like it than it gets deleted pretty fast.
