This was an interesting story I caught on cnn money. I'm not sure if its true, but cnn seems to be fairly reputable much of the time.

I highly doubt Merom is coming to the MacBooks anytime soon, if at all. (At least not until the MBP gets the next upgrade after Merom.)

I wonder if my mbp would fry eggs better? It's metal after all, I might even be able to manage bacon! I love bacon. I guess I could try. . .

1.) Merom won't be used in the MB until 2007.

2.) Merom will not run cooler than Yonah.

3.) Merom will be more powerful than Yonah without running hotter.

Don't doubt it. The days of large-scale product differentiation in Apple products is over. Apple has to keep up with the Jonses now. As soon as Merom comes out in volume, Apple will put it in the Macbook. They can't afford not to. People might tolerate paying $100-$200 more for a Macbook versus a Dell, but they're going to be pissed if $1000 Dells have Merom chips and only $2000+ MBPs get them.

The thing to remember is that the Macbook isn't really a "budget" notebook given its pricing. At $1100-$1500, it's squarely in the mid-range. Apple's going to have to give it a mid-range, current-generation CPU to compete. No more of this "G3 iBook, G4 PowerBook" nonsense.

I think the point is that anyone who pays 1-2 thousand dollar electronic device shouldn't run hot enough to cook an egg in the first place.

It doesn't.

It was a gag/joke/humorous exaggeration (from a PC Gamer site)

Well regardless of it being a gag, the message is the same -the MB is too hot.

So how much did your oven cost? Or are you saying you prefer gas to electric?

No, the message is don't be an idiot. Of course you can't fry an egg on a MB. It was meant to be funny (and it was till people didn't get it). Duh.

I've had my MacBook for about 1.5 months now and I have yet to get my machine too hot for my lap when I use it. Granted, I don't use Photoshop or any heavy apps like that, but I do use iPhoto a lot in between using Word and chatting a bit with friends.

You know, you do realize that eggs actually cook at a fairly low temperature? I mean, relative to other foods of course. It doesn't have to get very hot to cook an egg.

That said, no one has actually fried an egg on a MacBook.

Egg white protein (primarily albumin) begin to coalesce at approx 62 or 63 degrees Celsius (141-143 f). Now, the core duo chip itself can easily surpass these temperatures in a MacBook with any sort of load on it. In fact, most people seem to find core duo temps under heavy load getting significantly hotter than this. I can easily make my CPU hit and hold 170f by maxing out both cores. So you could cook an egg on your CPU.

But the external case surfaces are not at all likely to reach the necessary temperatures.
