My G4/466 is currently for sale, but I could probably wait until Jan7 to buy my new Mac. What are the odds that Apple will at least update the Pro line by then? And just what does no 9 mean? It won't be included , or that the new Macs won't work at all in 9?

..i understood that they won't boot in 9 , just run classic mode.
..if that's a prob. - and with me it is.
..then get a current dp and wait.
..by 2003/4 , there'll be PLENTY of s/w to play with..

The most likely is a minor revison, speedbump of CPU perhaps tweeks like faster combo drives, bigger HDs that kind of stuff. A resonable expectation is hat the current dual 1GHz will be the next "budget" tower and that the current top of the line will be replaced with something slightly faster.
How everything pans out depends on what stuff they can add to differentiate the 'fast faster fastest". If they add ATI 9700 in the fastest and 9500 in the faster they can add 167 MHz bus and super drive in the "fast". If they do not add such features the" fast" and "faster" might come to close for comfort and then the keep the combo drive. Endless permutations!
I can not imagine that Motorola suddenly have been able to get the current incarnation of the G4 at 2 GHz with good yields, and even that would be just a speed bump, a heck of a speed bump
A entry of a fourth generation powermac design would require a new CPU...

I just don't see it happening this soon. Its only been a few months since the last update. I don't plan on seeing anything until late February.

Don't watch for releases at Expos. Think product life cycle. New stuff was just released: Towers then PowerBooks and iBooks. Next should be iMac. Then towers again. The xServe product cycle is probably independent of these others, so it could get upgraded sometime soon, or not. Same with the iPod, though I doubt they fail to strategicly plan the releases of new iPods/xServes whatevers.
It seems that they're trying to get away from the semi-annual hardware announcements because it is hard on sales.

iMac speed bump with a slot loading drive is what's floating around.
A 1GHz iMac sounds fast. Knowing apple, they'll top out at 933MHz and we'll be disappointed once again (not that 1GHz wouldn't be disappointing).
Whatever happened to announcing new product before Xmas to boost sales? Why doesn't Apple do that? Or even price cuts!

expect no bumps of any kind in expos.
expos are for announcements, intros and state of mac reports now.
the idea is that they dont want you to wait for a expo to buy stuff.
they introed the software mainly at MWNY and i think they may reserve a EXPO to intro new new hardware (like a new powermac design) but not to speedbump

It is hard to say. I could see a minor speed bump. Say if they can get yields for faster PPCs then the dual 867 may become a dual 1GHz and so on up the ladder. I doubt they'll modify the motherboard though.

You're going to being seeing Apple release products based on market demand. In other words, the techies in Cupertino have a pipeline's worth of products rearing to go-and they'll be launched as the market demands it.
Take the recent PowerBook announcement for example-I am convinced this came along more because of the pitiful sales of PowerBooks the last 2 quarters than any other reason.
Seeing as the new PowerMacs were announced with a resounding "thud" from the majority of the Mac community, I would expect Apple to update them in the very near future-but not necessarily at the expo.
I for one believe Apple needs to shift its updates back to October (they used to make most announcements in October) to get in on the holiday sales. Though, with the traditional holiday sales spike for the computer industry is all but gone these days.

On the 14th of jan IBM and Motorola's partnership on PPC ends.
this means
IBM can sell GHz G3s (possibly faster) = faster iBook
Mot can release G5 (apparently IBM are holding this up due to a disagreement over the use of HyperTransport Vs RapidIO)
IBM can release the 970 (I'm not sure why they couldn't now, but this is what I'm told)
Mot and IBM competing with G5 and 970 can only be a good thing...
So, I wouldn't expect too much at MWSF, but shortly afterwards I hope for great things

The current power macs were not "just released", I got mine over 3 months ago. By January it will be 5 months old. That is long enough for a update.
But I would put my money on Feb, just like last year, a full 6 months and not at MWSF.

Carnac the Magnificent fortels all:
19" screen iMacs
Xraid
Xserve update (mostly because I have to order one on this years budget and every time that happens the item gets updated. Just like everytime I pickup a quarterback for my fantasy football team he gets injured and he's out for 4-10 weeks)
iPhone
Major improvement for iSync
So, no major upgrades for the MDD G4. However, they come out with a MDD Muffler. It will make the G4 75% quieter AND pass California emission standards!

I agree that Apple release new products when the pressure from the market and the avaiability from the suppliers converge. But you also have to consider the problems with the new MDD G4 emitting to much noise, and even if there is a new firmware update (no reports yet how it adresses the noice problem) I think they need to make a smaller adjustment to fix this problem. There is also reports that Motorola has made a G4 in the 1.6 range (or something like it maybe 1,4 or 1,5) and a minor speedbump is a realistic guess. This will get rid of the the lowend motherboard. There is pressure from the mac community for speed and also Apple needs to have a attractive product line to be competetive, specially now when the economy is shaky. If you weigh in all the people who has a say in the making of the products ie marketing, engineering, suppliers and also factors like part prices and the avaiability of parts, then you have a load of parameters to consider. I think Apple is very concerned about the competition and are doing the outmost to keep up. So my guess (as good as any) says Yes there is going to be speed bumps and modifications to the G4.

Apple is going to use Xmas to clear the channel of whatever stuff they want to replace, then BAM all those new Mac owners are going to want cry when new cheaper models replace them at MWSF. That's just the way it works...

I don't see major speed bumps for G4s. Maybe a minor speed bump.
Think about it. Apple has made a choice (or forced to make a choice) to go with multiple processors.
If a new chip is to hit the market, it will be more expensive than the chips they churn out now. Putting two of them in a G4 will be REALLY spendy.
I doubt IBM has it's 970 ready for Apple by January.
GOD I HOPE I'M WRONG!

i dunno... Apple has been coming out with good numbers lately... 800MHz iBooks, 1 GHz PB's WITH SuperDrive (slot loading at that...) All on par with rumors, and slightly ahead in some cases... (RAdeon 9000 in PB, 1GHz in PB... Slot load SD in PB...) So, while i doubt new PM's at MWSF, I think February could see some major revisions in the PM line-up. Steve has said 2003 will be the best ever.. lets see.

here's a theory... in 2003 Apple will focus solely on software making no new Macs, although making many weird products like sterios, digital cammeras and all that that can only interface with the Macs people already have, and all those who didn't buy Macs when they could have will be left out.
Then in 2004 when the PPC 970 is finnaly ready apple finnaly releases a machine that has more going for it than just advanced software... however apple will charge you 130 dollars for each new application on the computer since they're all so great now and it needed to make money by the stupid move it made in 2003...
Or we could all think of reasonable stuff...

From the Apple Store employee at the Northshore Mall in Massachusetts, the reason Apple didn't go with the slot load in the current iMac was because you could not use mini-CDs.
Perhaps an eMac update, nothing has change except who can purchase what configurations. Whatever they do, they should replace all of the MX 2 and 4 graphics cards across the hole product line.

Back to reality
1- Mac OSX 1.3 (Chimpanzee) about 30 to 45 min
2- Updated iApps: a better iCal, iSync, maybe new iPhoto 30min
3- Quark taking the stage to say more worthless things 5min
4- New Switch ads (Yawn!) 5min
5- Cheesy Mr. Schiller assuring us that the hardware is great, and they are using DDR RAM, and how the new 1GHz PowerBook is faster compared to P4 notebooks. 45min
6- With Apple losing it's attendees attention span, it will probably end the Keynote with some fire works! 5min
7- Apple posts multi-million dollar loss, and accomplishes a record-low of 6 attendees!
Mr. Gates throws a "I own the world!" party, we all become brain numb and use Windows for our daily brain-wash

The ATI Radeon 7500 32 MB DDR on an AGP 4x bus is not bad at all.
And I think we'll see updates to the Power Mac G4 by the end of January, like this year.
