I have noticed this minor annoyance while texting women. They always end texts in an exclamation point. It's a bit weird. Why do you guys do this? Is everything really that bubbly and exciting?

Ha. I think it's one of the gender communication differences. Using exclamation points is a way of being more, I dunno, agreeable. Men will just state the facts, period. Women will ask questions? and make interesting discoveries that you might also be excited to know about!

What, you're asking all 3 of the women here on MacNN?
"Everything's so clear to me now: I'm the keeper of the cheese and you're the lemon merchant. Get it? And he knows it.
That's why he's gonna kill us. So we got to beat it. Yeah. Before he let's loose the marmosets on us."

I am trying to use the semicolon a lot more lately; its use is falling out of fashion.

A while back, in the comic "Zits", Jeremy's mom got to point out to him that "teenage girls emote for a living." It's a really great observation; they really do overemote not just occasionally but frequently. It's irritating most of the time. And unfortunately, just as some guys still think it's funny to belch out the Gettysburg Address at 25, a lot of girls never get into this "being appropriate and contained" thing, so they keep on seeming like 15 year olds well into their 40s. That's really irritating.

You are all wrong.

Being in touch with my feminine side, I can tell you exactly why girls overuse the exclamation mark whilst texting:

It's because no mobile phone has so far been invented which allows them to dot their "i" characters with little hearts.

That'll be $10 off each of you. Thanks.

They're not so much "saggy" as "bodacious enough to have their own gravity." Saggy wouldn't fill out the shirt nearly as much.

And if she was short on brains, she wouldn't have understood the shirt anyway.

That was writing in general. This refers to txt messages, which weren't occurring within the mainstream then.

I believe it was Terry Pratchett who said that the use of more than one exclamation mark was a sign of a deranged mind!!

First rule: do not use semicolons. They are transvestite hermaphrodites that represent absolutely nothing. All they do is show that you've been to college.

I agree, one should never use semicolons; it is better to separate thoughts with periods.
