This is an ongoing, intermittent issue I have:

I open a file from my laptop in the other room. The file is read/write, yet Apple says it read only -- which of course defeats the whole purpose of file sharing.

I'm tapped out.
The file clearly is read/write, any ideas?

Also, an intern was working on a file the other day, she saved, closed, and quit, and left the building, yet Apple says the file lock is locked by her and of course, I have to do a save as, another head wringer. thanks!

What kind of files using what applications? I've found Office having trouble with large files on slow networks and marking the files as read only. Restarting the sharing service may also clear those issues. What are you using?

it's Excel. I sold the first issue, but the 2nd issue remains on the locked file. The intern is gone yet it still says the file is locked.

(what does restarting sharing services mean?)

Try restarting both computers.

And get a NAS for common shared files.

Are you using Mac OS X Server to share the files or what? What kind of share is it? AFP, SMB? Can you unlock the file on the server side?
