I just got a new 20" iMac Intel with 2 gigs of ram. I converted UT04 to universal Binary and the game is still almost unplayable. I forget how to toggle frame rate (any help there too?) but it's only good when theres NOTHING happening. As soon as fighting starts it looks like 1-2 FPS. Just impossible to play (no online playing either)
I've tried dumbing down everything with only mild success. What am I missing? I assume my machine could certainly handle this game with everything set on MAX levels....
any help is greatly appreciated

Yeah, im hoping you meant you downloaded/installed the latest UB patch for UT2004? Im not sure what you mean by 'converting it to UB'
UT2004 runs well on my rev a G5 20" iMac, i get 20fps at worst, and around 60fps other times..
I've also tested UT2004 + UB patch on a MacBook with 1gb of ram, and it ran pretty good on there too (was crap with 512mb of ram tho).
An intel 20" iMac with 2gb of ram should absolutely rip its way through UT2004 with ease. So yes, something is definitely wrong.

The worst thing about having a failing memory is..... no, it's gone.

Are you sure you're running the UB version? If you get info on UT2004 it should not say it is of kind Application (PowerPC)

ok I just did a reinstall of the game and then patched it again with the same updater. It works perfectly. I'm now getting 90+ FPS on average. I can again engage in the carnage!
thanks so much for the help and pushing me through this.
