Hallelujah--I got my DSL connection back!
I've got a Verizon account, about which I'm not all that happy. On the other hand, at least they got it up and running!

Sorry to hear that
I'm surprised that there's no cable broadband in Chicago. DSL is chancy, depending on how far you are from the station. I'm just lucky, cause there's no cable here either (although Comcast promises we'll get it--ha!)
But one way to improve your life is to get something other than AOL

That's absolutely nothing. Before I moved outta my mom's house, we were in the worst possible position. We lived IN San Jose, the "technological hub of the world" and we couldn't get DSL or Cable. The best we could do is IDSL, which is $90 to $120/month for a 144k line.
And the real kicker? We lived on Landess, the border street between San Jose and Milpitas. Milpitas offers Cable Modem access, but not San Jose. We used the same lines and everything! I tried everything I could think of (even buying an AirPort Base Station and having a neighbor host it for me.) but there was no way for me to get it.
And the estimated time for Cable to arrive accross the street? 2007. That's just complete bullsh*t. And now that there's that Sprint wireless DSL thingy, my brother can't get that either cuz there's a tree right in the direct line of site. The Sprint guys refuse to hook it up anyway, even though it's a microwave dish and can go through walls.
