A good friend of mine who has a BTO G4 without an internal modem (never thought he'd need the thing) but now needs a reliable dialup modem solution.

Would a USB modem for his G4 for full-time use under Mac OS X 10.1 be a no-fuss solution? If so, which are some good brands?

With that in mind, how hard would it be to obtain and install Apple's own internal modem? Would it be worth it when compared to a USB solution?

Thank you all in advance for your time and insight

Apples internal modem is built unto the motherboard so if your machine didnt come with it too bad. Also if your friend has need of the internet y did he think he wouldnt need the modem?

Is the USB Modem idea works its a testament to the greatness of X, allowing for completely obsolete non-scsi devices.

Just to clarify, he bought it when he had the ability to pipe into a local T1, but has since moved to a community where they won't have cable internet service until april, and needs a quick fix for email and light surfing.

I thought that Apple's internal modems were actually modules (thus the reason they are an option). I have a G3 tower and it is a module option. I have a G4 and I believe it is the same (an option that can be installed later). My guess is that Apple would charge a lot for their modem module.

MultiTech has a USB modem called the MT5634ZBA-USB which works with Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X (both OSes not requiring a driver for the modem, just the usual modem script). It also works with Mac OS 8.5.1 and 8.6, but with the need for a driver (and the usual modem script).

Well, I figured it was time I went ahead and posted. I am the one Visnaut posted this query about. What happened was this: I originally ordered to twin machines, both G4 MP 450's (AGP Graphics). At the time, our house had a small LAN setup with a shared cable modem connection. I have since moved, and am using my old Rev. A iMac with a small but useful app called gNAT and OS X to share my pathetic 26400 bps connection. My area should have broadband access available by the beginning of summer or so. Until then, I have sold my iMac, and need a temporary (cheap) solution to my connectivity boggle. Now, I know for a fact that one can get the modem unit for a G4 MP 450 AGP, a friend of mine got one from someone he knows that no longer had a use for it. Also, there is a Apple Specialist about an hour away from me that offers it for a mere $20, but charges $20 more to install it, when I will need no installation help. I noticed that carver found it at Small Dog, but I can't tell if it's the modem for the AGP based motherboard, or the PCI model, OR if they are in fact the same model. If ANYONE has ANY information on the specifications of the G4 AGP based internal modem or the Apple Part #, please let me know. Also, incase I can't find it, maybe I could get some opinions about the best deal for the best USB modem? Thanks in advance. I appreciate the wonderful help I always get here.
