"ANN ARBOR, Michigan (AP) -- A man who ran naked through his neighborhood to persuade his girlfriend to marry him got more than he bargained for when he was chased and shot at, police said.

The couple were discussing marriage early Wednesday when the woman said she wasn't sure if she was ready, according to Ann Arbor police reports.

The man responded that taking risks is an important part of life and, to prove his point, jumped out of a first-floor window and ran naked across the street.

Before he could return, he spotted a couple walking and hid in some bushes to avoid them. A 28-year-old man noticed the bushes rustling and bare feet underneath, then drew a .40-caliber handgun and ordered the naked man out, police said.

The naked suitor ran away, but the armed man gave chase and threatened to shoot, police said. The gunman fired a shot and the naked man fell to the ground, suffering minor injuries.

A resident called police, who arrested the gunman on charges of aggravated assault and carrying a concealed weapon. He was released following further investigation, police Sgt. Patrick Hughes told The Associated Press.

The naked man was not arrested and didn't want to pursue charges, Hughes said."

Now what sort of moron walks around on the street with a gun, sees bare feet and considers it threatening and when a naked man is running away feels the need to start shooting at him to KILL him?

Uh... let's not let the naked, pervert completely off the hook here. When you do strange things, expect strange results.

Hiding naked in the bush is an invite to get shot by a passing stranger?

The shooter was an idiot and should spend time in jail. At least 5 years IMO.

Getting shot is not a result I would expect in any situation short of one where I'm attacking someone with a weapon.

Do you people routinely shoot suspected exhibitionists?

What about streakers during football or baseball games? Now THERE's an idea!

Can you imagine if he had better aim and actually KILLED him?

Personally I think the shooter should be shot.

That's what was startling. The guy was most likely aiming to kill.

Which brings me to a question I've always wondered about: Why is "attempted murder" a lesser crime than murder? We're going to punish you less because you suck at it? In both situations you took action to kill a person. I fail to see how your success is relevant.

This is a guess, and by no means a justification, but it might be for those who have a change of heart at the last second.

I merely said expect the unexpected if you do something dumb.

1 dumb person running naked + 1 random, dumb person with a gun = ??

You reap what you sow.

He did a really good job of proving his point about risk-taking.

Hmmm maybe he proved he's not a good one to take risks on. That said I know several people who just really enjoy being naked. It's not so strange.

If he wanted to show off his shooting skills, he should have tried to hit the guy's sack (he would have to hit between the legs, from behind, while the guy was running). Might well have been the greatest single shot of all time.

Yup, sounds like quite the risk-taker.

Oh, really, is that so? Allow me to debunk that particular point of view:

Non-naked proposal: “So, would you like to get naked?”
Naked proposal: “So, would you like to get dressed?”

Now tell me which one you prefer.

Naked in inappropriate places or at inappropriate times == Pervert.

Is the personal attack really necessary?

Yes it is necessary. This whole thread was posted to make people feel smug.

It's getting smuggy in here isn't it?

You suggest that the guy was a pervert and deserved to be shot because he was naked and now you're complaining about personal attacks? Doesn't that strike you as a little ironic? I mean, at least nobody here is shooting at you because they find your actions offensive.

There is nothing more natural than being naked. Just because one is naked does not mean their actions are associated with some kind of sexual or lewd conduct.

It's too bad that so many are programmed by society to think nakedness and sex are bad or evil.

I'm sorry you felt I was stating that the naked guy deserved to be shot. I wasn't. I was only saying that the person running around naked should have used better judgment. While being shot at is a bit extreme, did the naked guy consider the potentially negative consequences of his actions? Being arrested or even losing his job or something if news of this got back to his employers? My guess is "no".

This is getting tiring. Couldn't it just be a "mutual respect" kind of thing? I won't make you look at MY dangly bits if You don't me me look at YOURS? That would be the reason there are places where this is appropriate. To be around others that don't mind this behavior. It's called courtesy.

Not to mention, he didn't even press charges against the guy that shot at him.

Wonder why that was....

If there was some naked guy, pervert, child molester, burglar or who knows what outside my home, hiding behind a few bushes and I happened to be packing at the moment, then you can bet I would've found out what he was up to.

I can understand the gunman to a point -- he's walking along with his female and sees a man hiding in the bushes. My thought would be "he's probably hoping to surprise and mug us -- or worse."

But when Nature Boy ran away, he was no longer a threat. Mr. anti-naked-vigilante had no business chasing him down.
