Talib Kweli was listed as "Talib".. I forgot about MosDef.... but I rank Talib higher than Mos , and Talib missed the cut.... Lupe Fiasco shouldnt be mentioned in this thread at all... No diss, but c'mon, he isnt touching at least 30 rappers I listed.

What? I voted Eminem, and I'll tell you why.

A lot of rap is becoming boring because it draws on the same cliche theme of black re-empowerment through the ironic, mainstream exploitation of ghetto music which brings money, cars, girls and a voice to black, disenfranchised young men.

But Eminem is unique in this cultural context—he is a minority within a minority.

His raps are articute, ironic, and his themes culturally insightful, witty, and cleverly self-referential. He uses incredible enjambment and wordplay. And he never uses the tiresome N-word.

I voted for Eminem. He's the Elvis of hip-hop.

Compared to most radio artists, he is great, but compared to other greats, he is just "good". And he has his stand out tracks, but his albums are generally marketed towards junior high kids, his content is sllightly geared towards, once again, junior high kids. Add to that , his voice is annoying (IMO)... and what he did to Tupac songs was lame. BUT, most of all, his albums are slightly above average... his best album (MMMLP) was about a 4/5, the others were not even close.

I'm not a hip-hop buff. I only really listen to Eminem, Mobb Deep, Nas and Wu-Tang. My two-cents isn't worth much. However, how many rappers have engineered fictional identities and rapped "in character" like Eminem's incarnation Slim Shady? I think that's quite cool.

Dire Straits did something similar—but less explicit—with the song "Money for Nothing". That song was sung in character, but a lot of people missed the point and thought Mark Knopfler was homophobic.

It's the narrative power of hip-hop that appeals to me, and IMHO Eminem is a true raconteur.

You can't listen to 'Mockingbird' and make the claim he knows what rhythm is.

I didn't say every rap. I think Encore is his worst album. Pretty crappy, actually. Except for "Love You More" and "We as Americans", it's like he's run out of things to say and is just foundering. I hope he gets his voice back.

Anyway, what I said is still true for the majority of his stuff. The exception doesn't disprove the general rule.
