I think this was one of the undercovered big stories from the keynote. If this is really going to be first party simultaneous development from EA, then we can probably look forward to things like multiplatform network play, simultaneous patches, etc. This is great news!

I wonder what Aspyr has to say about all of this. Aspyr was the primary porter for EA.

Does the use of Cider mean that the games will run a little slower on the Mac than they would on the same hardware under Windows?

I am mixed regarding this. The only big EA game I am excited about are the SimCity series, and I am gonna wait and see how the series turns out since the new SimCity wont be developed by Maxis.

I'm so glad about this news but I hope people won't pirate these games, at least not until they get a solid foot in Mac market :/

I have C&C3 for XBOX360 but I definitely will buy C&C3 on Mac and some others.

Probably 10-15%. So the news is great but not supergreat.

If EA was smart, they'd ship both Mac and PC versions in the same box.

Frankly, I thought Cider was vaporware. I didn't expect anyone to actually ship games using it.

Not to take away anything from Cider, but it still feels like this may just make the "Windows-first, Mac-next" mantra stick for future game development. I suppose this is better than the current situation where we either have no ports (e.g. NWN 2 and so many others) or bad ports (AoE where you couldn't play with PC Users), with the good ones far and few in between.

Still, kudos to EA for taking one step forward. If they sell both Mac and PC versions of the game in a single box, that'd be simply wonderful.

Just FYI, these "ports" do not work on PowerPC Macs. They're using Cider, which takes a Windows binary and puts it in a WINE-like wrapper.

Edit: I'm late to the party, guess this was already covered.

hmm... well at least cider will be a good thing if all pc games could run on macs and when the mac regains enough market share, they can start fully porting them. I also wonder if we will be able to play with pc users now since its technically the same game and the same engine just running through a fast emulation system... i.e. cider.

Yeah, that way Mac users could decide whether to install the Ciderized version or the Windows version - and change his mind later without buying the game again! That would go a long way towards building good karma with Mac users.

Don't screw this up, EA!

I somehow doubt that as that would be much harder to measure sales especially for games without access to internet.

But I'm all for it Ciderized version means we more likely will get to pay the same (discounted) price as PC version which would be awesome.
