Just brought home a new 13" MBP and want to get it setup. Need to transfer my stuff over from my iBook G4 running 10.4.11. I want to keep my MBP clean and efficient so I want to be careful about the transfer. I've been reading all morning about the pros and cons of Migration Assistant. Seems like MA works better for some, and for certain purposes, than others. But some of the issues may well have been resolved by now since most of the posts I saw pertained to previous releases.

My questions are:

What should I do to "clean up" my iBook before migration? I've read I should clear caches and repair permissions but I'm not sure how to go about this in a comprehensive way. Is there anything else I should do? How can I be sure I'm not transferring over any spyware/malware/bugs or whatever? I notice that I get some spam email sent from my own email address pretty regularly so I must be infected with something... Is there any resource that walks you through how to do all this in a complete and comprehensive way?

I'm also wondering if I should do a limited transfer of just docs and iphoto maybe and reinstall the apps I use that don't come with the MBP, which aren't that many. My applications folder is 10.4 GB; my documents folder is about 1 GB; nothing on iTunes and about 1.5 GB on iPhoto. I've copied my apps folder here in case that helps:

My recommendation: just use migration assistant and be done with it.

If something "goes wrong" or you don't like the results, just erase and reinstall with the disks that came with the machine and use a different approach to migrate.
