I really enjoyed Phobos post where he had the sack to put his site up and ask for feedback. And after one person did it a few of us jumped on the proverbial bandwagon and were keen to get involved. The thread, however, is going a bit slow and I would really like to see more design work so that we can help each other out with advice and such.

C'mon post the URL to your Portfolio here's mine

Looking forward to it!!!

I checked out your site and it looks pretty good. I like the simple look of the pages design, nothing overly fancy. You've got some impressive illustrations and artwork. I especially like your "Cape Town Seascape."

Now time for mine. I don't have everything on it yet, but I'm working on it.

godzookie EXCELLENT SITE AND VERY VERY NICE WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like it very much.It would be nice of course to see a bigger versions of your work but I know I'll wait till you fix the links. The only thing is that
the main navigation bar is very small.Needs to be bigger to see everything there. And just because it is small I didn't know how to go back and navigate to the other sections.Appart from that it's a great site with what I can see AWESOME work.

I just got done adding a bunch of my pencil, charcoal and pen drawings to my portfolio. Check it out. My drawing instructor has been trying to get me to use a broader range of values, so that's what I'm working on lately.

nice work spectre. Two things, a) watch out on your reflections, sometimes things are looking a little too reflective, second of all borrow a human physiology book from the library and look at skeletons and how the bones fit together and how muscle connects to bone, understanding how the underlying structure in the human body will help you understand how to draw the figure, i think thats your weakness at the point.

Thanks godzookie2k. As a matter of fact, I recently checked out a human anatomy book from the college library and have been drawing from it. Drawing people has always been really hard for me...I can sit and draw inanimate objects no problem, but whenever I draw people I seem to run in to all kinds of problems. I don't get frustrated or anything, I just don't really know how to transfer what I see on the body onto a piece of paper. I'm working on it though.

What a great thread. I have taken the time to look at everyones sites and all the work that you have displayed. I'm am very impressed to say the least. Everyone has a very unique sites and ideas that they incorporate into their sites are refreshing. I feel a bit ashamed to post my site after checking out your work but here it is. I just recently started web design and this is really the first site that i've done. Please check it out and let me know what you think. I could really use the input. Also this is a site for my business mostly my work but there are a few things in there from Ice Enclosure.. Gotta give credit where it's due...

otis52: First and foremost, for your first website, it is actually very good. It is definitely the best-first design I've seen.

The biggest problem with it is how many big images you have. Remember that a lot of people still use modems. Try reducing the file size of each of your layout images by tweaking them in Fireworks or any other application with similar features. Also, I think the logo at the top of the page is just a little to large and "in your face." Even when I'm trying to browse around and look at the content, I still feel like the header is jumping out at me and kind of getting in the way.

I really like the color scheme though, it's appealing to the eye and has a definite modern look. Good job.

Next...

Avenir: I like the simple quality your site has. This is just personal opinion (hey that's what you want to hear though, eh?), but I think the splash page should maintain consistent. It will be the first thing people see, and should set the mood/vibe of the site and give people an idea of what they are about to get into. Also, some of the image links are broken on a few of the pages.

I like how you detached the application switcher and took a screenshot of it to show the apps. Something a little different than what has been done before.

You have some cool stuff in your portfolio. One thing that I think you should consider is using less typefaces in your designs. If you have any more than 3 type faces, things often start to look cluttered and messy.

Another thing that you might think about is the rather large blank space at the top of each page. It pushes the entire page down to where the actual content begins at about the halfway point in my browser, which means a lot of un-needed scrolling. Lots of good things going on though.

Leonis: I've actually checked out your stuff several times before. Like anarkisst said, i'm surprised you haven't landed a job yet.

Anarkisst: I like the primary color scheme you have going. The yellow background hurts my eyes after a while though (but that could just me, I have very sensitive eyes). You have a lot of good content that was fun to look through, I especially like the comics section and looking at your pen and ink drawings. I especially like the dead bears, hahaha!

I look forward to seeing more of everybody's work.

I hate everyone equally.

3+ hour drive up to Milwaukee for break tonight... probably can fix up some stuff on the way (no, I'm not actually driving ) on the Ti. Thanks soooo much for the comments. If anyone has anything else to add, please go to my page and let me have it, I'd really like to hear what you all think.

As for the splash page, it remains fairly static for a few months. The motivation behind changing it is a lot of other pages, such as www.ziggen.com and lockjaw.net change theirs fairly frequently, and i thought it was a neat idea. however, I do definitely see your point, and perhaps I will refrain from changing it too much (after one more edit) and stick with new material under "new" like it says...

Once again, thanks...

Your stuff is incredible, original, beautiful and much more. I am truely in awe. The "slow motion" pic was one of my absolute favorites.

..right got to get busy, to much good work out there, and nowhere near enough of it was done by me. I'm amped again.

Definitely not a problem with the loading time, which is a good thing. You have some very cool stuff, I especially like the Heineken ads and comics.
Two things I would look into if I were you: Don't have the portfolio open in a new window, there is really no need for it in this case. Also, try do something to the frame with the thumbnails. I don't like pages where I have to scroll down in a really skinny part of the screen, it cramps me up. Try laying the thumbnails out with a simple table without any borders, or at least decrease the height of the thumbnails so you don't have to scroll.

Other than that, I like the way the actual content of your portfolio is what gains the interest, while the rest is kept very simple. It enhances each individual piece of art. Also, nothing is better than chicks with guns =)

Like I said I did that site over a year ago and it is mainly to serve as an online portfolio that I can show friends. I really have need need for a portfolio any more as I have plenty of work in mulitple industries.

As for the new window that was a decision I made to aid in bandwidth, so after each thumb you wouldn't have the portfolio page reload 20 times

As for the thumbs in a table, been there, done that. I have designed over 100 web sites so I know what I'm doing. That site being a year old was like the 5th version I did for it. Thumbs in a table is so boring, static and unneccesary. I wanted something different and that's what I did and have no problems about it.

Here's my contribution to the thread. It's just my web site design work - some good, some not so good

It's been really, really interesting and fun looking at everyone else's work, too! Sure does inspire one to get working on one's own stuff ... and that's a very good thing when one has lots of work one has to finish...

Anyhow, good show by everyone! This is fun!

Just stumbled upon this thread after not looking at the forums for a while. Very cool seeing everyone's work.

I offer up my site for your perusal. Please forgive me for the boring web design. I am an animator and 3d artist by trade. Web design most definitely isn't my forte.

Very nice, I especially enjoyed the lego-animations... and the web-design wasn't half-arsed either

That lego-contraption game is like a 3D Incredible Machine, right? Will it ever be realized?

Thanks Spectre666. Thanks for being an integral part of this forum with your good advice and criticism. It should give these "rookies" good advice to learn from!

I had few issues with the yellow too. But I think another redesign/update is boiling in my brain soon...being an unemployed Web/Graphic Designer will do that, I guess. :o

I'm going to plug a friend of mine's site. I love it. It's fun and a great use of Flash for sound. Also his design scheme works well with the site name:

Fishtinky.net

Give him some feedback!

I use a mouse... and beleive it or not... Redeemer, (the most complex of my illustrations) was done with the old iMac puck mouse. I can't use tablets as my hands vibrate to much to gain much control over the pen.

One of the hardest things is seeing correctly: looking more than drawing.

Draw what you see, not what you think you see. The body is especially hard because we think we are so familar with how it looks, but that mental image is not in a perspective that works on a 2d surface. That was the biggest think that helped me: the clock on the wall is not a circle from where i am sitting, it's ovalar. I remember drawing ovals in drawing class for a whole day once as an assignment.

In the web design sections you forgot to define a hit area on the text buttons.

1.2 megs? Pardon me for being impatient but that is starting to push it perhaps splitting it up into separate movies that load at separate times?

On the main navigational buttons along the bottom, I kind of wish the "click" sound came on mousedown as opposed to mouseover... some sort of "this button has been clicked" feedback is kind of a good thing...

In the "designs" section, is there an order to the corner that folds down between image transitions? I think there should be. When you get to the end, I figured out that if you click the forward arrow again it will start over, but an option to go backward would be nice throughout the sequence.

Very cool look and feel, I love "techie" identity systems.

Nick

edit: actually, across the board you forgot to define hit areas on the text buttons...

Yeah, I know that the file size is huge, I'm working to cut it down. Thanks for your comments on my site. Keep posting.....

Beautiful aesthetic Griggsy. A few things.
Frontpage still has the "welcome to adobe golive" text in the title

frameset page: has the rather undescriptive title of "nav"

The left frame's really cool "slide menu from the bottom" effect (very cool) failed the mozilla test. Its a ie only trick, so basically your site doesn't work under netscape. Bad karma for you.

Watch how both frames work together as a whole when you have a piece loaded in the right. Its an old school way of thinking, but watch your grid (see image below)

see what I mean? each frame looks good individually, but together it looks a little disjumbled...

hope this helps
