Hello all,

We have a website which allows us to click and open many documents which we then rework for specific clients. When using Firefox I can click each link, and Word will then open each one as it should. However, when using Chrome it will not open Word, and instead opens a page of gibberish.

Does anyone know how to prompt Chrome to opens these docs using word instead of opening up another tab of this gibberish?

Chrome will only save files like .doc and .docx. Probably for security reasons, it won't invoke the appropriate app to open them.

If you're getting gibberish, it's because you've somehow gotten Chrome to open the .doc file as raw text - which includes a lot of header data that tells Word how to handle the document. Try right-clicking on the link and having Chrome just save the file. It should give you the option of opening it after it finishes saving.

Thanks so much!. I right click and do "save link" and it automatically opens in Word. Perfect.

I like Google's approach to Microsoft's apps' security issues: let the built in alerts ("This document includes macros: do you want to enable them?") manage the security aspects of the download. I' glad this works for you.
