January 17, 2003 - Nintendo confirmed to IGNcube today that beginning February 9 and running through May of this year, consumers who buy a GameCube for $149.99 at participating retailers will get a free game with the system courtesy of the company.
Buyers will be able to choose from four games, including: Metroid Prime, Resident Evil 0, Star Fox Adventures or Mario Party 4.

"It's an exciting program," said Nintendo of America's vice president of marketing and corporate affairs Perrin Kaplan. "It's a great opportunity come February for consumers to get their hands on the games that keep the folks at IGN up at night:Metroid Prime, Mario Party, Star Fox Adventures and Resident Evil 0."

The more aggressive move by Nintendo could provide an extended boost to holiday sales of GameCube, which were solid, but noticeably behind a larger spike in demand for Microsoft's Xbox console.

For those of you who haven't bought a GC yet, will this news change your mind about buying one?

first two games are great, but avoid StarFox like the plague. Horrable game.

That's a pretty good deal. I'd take advantage of it if I didn't already have a Cube

Why do all the good deals happen after I already buy one?

I bought a Platinum 'Cube from Target because they were offering a free $20 gift card with purchase.

The next week, they offer Metroid Prime for $20 with the purchase of a 'Cube. Best Buy and Circuit City came up with some interesting offers around the same time.

Not long after that, Nintendo offers a $25 rebate to anyone who buys a 'Cube.

And now this.

No fair.

On a somewhat related note, Best Buy has lowered the price of Eternal Darkness to $20.

Seriously? Lowered it by $20, or *to* $20? Is it a sale that will continue until Monday or Tuesday, or did it expire on Saturday?

I hear that game is really interesting and almost scary. Anyone else recommend it for $20?

To $20. I assume it's a new regular price. The game was hyped and didn't sell much of anything. Too bad, I like it.

It plays a lot like Resident Evil with a reasonable control scheme. Still has the weird fixed camera angles, though.

It's available on their Web site too. For some reason, it doesn't show up when you use their search engine, but you can get to it by navigating their site.

is it even a starfox game?

"starfox adventures" was originally a game that was going to be called "dinosaur planet". the initial idea sort of tanked, but they decided a character tie-in would maybe salvage it thus the starfox liscense.

i really like starfox on N64 and SNES. is there lots of flying scenes adn stuff or is it all wandering through that horrible looking jungle crap with the silly stick thing?

OT: IMO, this offer only precludes GCN getting dropped to $99.

I can't seem to find this information anymore... Anyone know anything else about this "offer"? I'm in the market but am willing to wait to get Metroid for free...

So now they have two decent games -- Halo and Xtreme Volleyball? At this rate, they should have a pretty entertaining library going by 2007.

The Xbox controller is horrible... and if I can't play Monkey Ball on it, I don't want it!

At my local store they have $10 off pretty much every GC game -- making them all $39.99. I've pre-ordered Zelda, and I'm gonna pick up a cube when the game gets here; I hope they have a Zelda version of the cuble (like the Zelda N64).

Well, I waited and this deal did come through...

After scouring the Sunday ads in the paper, I found that Circuit City was offering the best deal for a GameCube with one of the above mentioned games for $139! Needless to say, I picked one up yesterday along with Metroid... Good times so far...

Next up, a couple more games and a wavebird controller...

If you bought it from KayBee, ToysRUs, EBGames, or another good gaming store then you can "return" it for a new one and get in on the deal (they all have 30-day policies on this sort of thing).
