This problem just started recently, unable to update or check update, message prompted "Failed, error occurred when checking". I have two systems running 10.5.2.

Macpro early 2007 model (3 ghz - 4 cores) works fine for now
Macbook Pro 2008 model (2.5 ghz) cannot update

Is this a problem with 10.5.2 or just a hardware issue. Btw, I have ran disk utility several times, both permission and repair disk. Any advise? Thanks

Have you rebooted? Maybe the software update server just happened to be down.

Did the update on both machine at the same time and only my MP could check for updates. Hope it is not the 10.5.2 on 2008 MBP problem...

I think it is important for you to check this under a different (administrator) user on the problematic computer. There are about a dozen files you can delete, mostly softwareupdate preference files and cache files (including ByHost files), but if you can isolate it to one account, that simplifies the next steps to take (and would also indicate that the problem is not serious). If it's a system wide problem, it may be more challenging.
