I have some .avi files that only open with Quicktime. I want to have VLC be my default application for .avi files but I have to right click, open as or use open in VLC. Is there a way to do this? Thanks.

Once you get the Info window (right click or command+I) on the .avi file, go to 'Open with:' (expand it if the pop-up menu is not visible) choose VLC from the pop-up menu and click on "Change all…", so yours .avi files would open with VLC by default.
