I'll be in San Diego next weekend. (Friday night - Sunday).

I was thinking about traveling OTB to Tijuana. I've never been there before and I'd like to see it.

My questions are this:

- I've heard it has become dangerous in recent memory. While I can generally take care of myself, I'm not sure I'd be able to defend myself against a drug cartel who wanted to kidnap me.
1. Is it safe to go there? (Note: I'll be traveling alone ... staying in San Diego, and using Taxi once I cross the border)

2. If the answer to #1 is "yes" then: Where is a good place to go for an evening of fun?

3 If safe ... what's the latest it's worth staying out on Friday and Saturday before heading back to the US?

1. My advice would be to just walk across from San Ysidro and hike it. Most of the good stuff is within a few miles of the border anyway. The worst thing that could happen is extortion from a police officer, and that usually only happens if you drive into Mexico.

2. Big Red Pharmacy

3. Ok, now you're starting to sound like a seventeen year old who wants to get plastered.

Sorry .. not trying to sound like a 17 year old.
Planning to stay sober ... just want to hang around ... perhaps have a beer ... only planning to stay for a few hours, but won't be arriving until about 9 or so.

(It was late when I posted it ... just looking for safety tips.) The state department raised a travel alert on the border towns which is why I posted my question.

(Thanks!)

I've grown up in San Diego ... LOTS to see here.

Tijuana, at the moment has lost over 90% of it's tourist business ... drug cartels are battling it out with the police
and the Federales.

The typical lookieloo tourista is fine ... the merchants down there will be happy to see you!

Enjoy yourself - drop me an email - I can give you more tips.
