iPod mini power cable question

	I have a plaster bust of Beethoven, and I am thinking of making it into an iPod charger/stand. I bought an extra firewire --> ipod mini cable on ebay. Will the iPod always be on if it is charged and there is power going to it? I am wondering if there are any downsides to storing the ipod plugged into power. Is this just what a normal dock is?
