Which do you prefer, JJ Abram's first Star Trek movie (2009), or his first Star Wars movie(2015)?
Personally, overall, I would say i prefer the Star Trek movie.
Cheers

I'm a big fan of both franchises.
For these two movies... I'd give Star Trek a C and Star Wars a B.
I'll say this, The Force Awakens felt a lot more like a Star Wars movie then Star Trek felt like a Star Trek movie.

If the question was which one was truer to the 'original'/universe, sure...the answer would be Star Wars.
BUT.....
Which one of the movies did you like more? I think as far as character development, script, pacing, Star Trek has the edge over Star Wars.

Even if they existed in a vacuum, Star Wars is a better movie.
Star Trek just didn't do it for me.
The look = A
The actors = A
The tone = A
The actual story of the movie = D-
Both movies suffer hard from lots of little eye-rolling moments that add up over time, but my eyes rolled out of my head and out the door on Star Trek. This movie had plot holes you can drive a truck through.

The story for Star Trek was a bit ridiculous. Cocky, irritating little shitbag cadet who keeps arguing with superiors and disobeying orders gets made Captain after about 3 days of Star Fleet service? Pull the other one.
I'm surprised I haven't seen a "Kylo Ren and Stimpy" mashup anywhere yet.
And since he doesn't like his given name and he loves Vader so much, why isn't he Darth something? All the other Sith were except for Dooku.

3 years of Starfleet academy (he was graduating a year early), which by all accounts in fiction, makes anything in our present military look like the cub scouts. They're taught to command.

Yeah but there was no way his negative traits were even countered by his moments of insight or genius, let alone eclipsed. Military organisations are all about discipline and rules. Rewarding that kind of behaviour is unbelievable to me. Maybe if he was a member of the Klingon fleet it would fit.

To bad starfleet is more of a exploration and science organization than a military one. Otherwise the ships would be totally different.

Didn't they try and setup all the qualified captains got killed, thus forcing them to go with Kirk?
I bought it as "movie logic", but I think in "reality" you'd have someone who's been the captain of some type of logistics ship (fleet tender, transport) who'd be put in charge. Kirk would be made one of that person's officers.

I liked the setup from the old FASA role playing game. Starfleet was a military organization. It had to be, because we were surrounded by Klingons, Romulans, and Gorn. This was to some extent built off of Star Fleet Battles, which was military up the yang.
The Enterprise was attached to "Galaxy Exploration Command", so they didn't have a strictly military mission, but I'm pretty sure the ship was designated as a "heavy cruiser".
FWIU, Roddenberry did not like where FASA went with things, so the license was pulled. The SFB license was written before people knew how to do such things, so I think that's in perpetuity.

They weren't only military, in fact they didn't even have dedicated warships at the time. The were exploration vessels with some limited arms.

He was there, already on the Enterprise, Spock was captain (after Pike was captured). When Spock lost it, after his home planet was destroyed and his mother died, Kirk was the last resort.

I know they weren't a military organisation, but their structure and hierarchy etc is very militaristic, regimented.
Surely Sulu had been on board the Enterprise longer than Kirk, wouldn't he have been first pick? Or Uhuru? In TNG there was always numerous other officers kicking about on other decks. I'm sure they could have dredged up a hundred guys more experienced than Kirk.

I was saying something similar, only replacing it with the captain of a less glamorous type ship.
I also feel the thing has always been pretty damn military. When we were kids, and someone would declare "if Starfleet existed I would totally join", the reply was "yeah, like you're going to join the navy".

They weren't command officers, aka. red shirts.

A Constitution class starship has a crew compliment of either 205 or 430 depending on the date according to a source I just googled. Even the lower number must have had a handful of other officers that weren't on the bridge. Don't they have three shifts so they can run 24/7?

They don't even have seat belts. No one's wearing pressure suits never mind body armor. All the explody bits are next to peoples work stations. There's nothing separating the transporter pad from the guy at the controls. You have to crawl through tiny tubes to get at half the equipment instead of pulling the panel of the side of a corridor.
I understand most of these are tropes but they prevent me from seeing it as a military vessel.

Are we only talking about the reboot?
Sulu was captain of a battleship in the original movies. That seems pretty military to me.

FASA apparently. To the point where if I Google "star trek excelsior class" the text snippet from the second hit is:
"The Excelsior-class was a type of battleship and explorer that was first built in the 2280s and..."

No, I meant jacked up/ f#cked up. Blowing up Vulcan screwed with the time line because the events that are involved with my idea happened later in the "history of the future"

I didn't vote because I didn't watch either film and have no plans to do so either. But just putting in my two cents, if I was forced to watch one, I would choose Star Wars.

You can count either Doctor Who or Terminator as reboots if you need a third.

The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.
