I have an Alfa AWUS036NHR wireless USB adapter. After installing the drivers, my Mac recognizes the adapter and a Wireless Network Utility displays all of the detected networks. However, the network I am trying to connect to is a campus network that requires a username/password for authentication rather than a regular network key. Am I missing something or am I simply unable to connect to such networks?

That type of authentication normally takes place through a web portal of some kind. I don't know of any wifi card which supports usernames to join networks. Typically you join the Wifi first then authenticate through a web site.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....
