Developer Final Draft has released Final Draft Writer, its first scriptwriting app for the iPad. The company has had another iPad app -- Final Draft Reader -- on sale for several months, but as its name implies the title can only display scripts, not edit them. Writer includes templates for projects like movies, plays, and sitcoms, and support for several of the features of the desktop Final Draft, such as SmartType auto-completion, character dialogue highlighting, generated reports, and quick switching between revisions.

Scripts can be imported via email or iTunes, printed via AirPrint, and uploaded to Dropbox accounts. TUAW notes that the app has been in development for over two years, requiring a dedicated team to port the desktop Final Draft technology. Writer requires iOS 5 or later. Final Draft is currently charging $30 for the app, but that price is set to go up to $50 on September 30th.
