When I sudo shutdown now I get the following message that seems to indicate that all is not well:
Bootstrap_lookup()failed(ipc/send)invalid destination port
Bootstrap_lookup()failed(ipc/send)invalid destination port
Bootstrap_lookup()failed(ipc/send)invalid destination port
Any idea what this means?

Welcome to OS 10.2. That's been a common problem since last fall, and I've never seen an answer as to eactly what that means and why 'shutdown now' is broken. I realy miss the feature, myself.
File a bug report with Apple, maybe they'll fix it in 10.3.
