We have had our OS X server going for several months without any problems and now all of a sudden the "Windows Services" refuse to start up.

The log for the windows services contians this info repeated many times:

[2002/07/03 23:36:43, 1] /SourceCache/sambax/sambax-26/source/lib/debug.c:debug_message(247)
INFO: Debug class all level = 1 (pid 609 from pid 609)
[2002/07/03 23:36:43, 0] /SourceCache/sambax/sambax-26/source/lib/util_sock.c:open_socket_in(820)
bind failed on port 139 socket_addr=0.0.0.0 (Address already in use)

what could it all mean???

Does anybody have any idea what i can do to get this working again. Apple Knowledge Base wasn't any help to me, either was searching the MacNN Forums. TIA.

The line:

[2002/07/03 23:36:43, 0] /SourceCache/sambax/sambax-26/source/lib/util_sock.c:open_socket_in(820)
bind failed on port 139 socket_addr=0.0.0.0 (Address already in use)

gives you your answer. Something else is already running on port 139 (the NetBIOS port) and therefore the server cannot start.

Try running lsof -i to get a list of open network connections to see if there's another process already using that port (you should see something like "TCP *:139" in the last column, the first column is the process name).

If nothing's listed there, check to see if anyone has enabled ipfw (the built-in firewall) to block port 139 connections
