it's being erroneously replace-all'd by "&-amp;", which of course doesn't render as HTML. Worse, try to edit a post that has had an "&" added and what do you get? "&"

Of course, posting this will be completely mangled...

Test: &

Ah, I see.

"&"

LOL, everytime you edit it replaces the Ampersand with Ampersand+amp

We're aware of the problem.
There was an update of vBull Wednesday morning, and it buggered some things like the ampersand in urls. Admins are looking into it, but it may be something that has to be fixed from orbit.

Yeah, I was thinking of reporting this too... Looks like the text sanitization is occurring twice sanitizing sanitized text. Not that the guy(s) in charge don't know that, but...

Did that vBull update introduce an ENOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORMOUS hang on anybody else's Safari?

I get it every single time I open any new page - from click, link, bookmark, whatever - while a MacNN forum page is open in another tab.

I'm not seeing a lag with Safari on my iPad, but I usually use Firefox on my iMac, and through the updates there has been no noticeable change in performance there, either.

I use Firefox and can definitely see a slowness to the forums. Though, I can't say for certain it's the fault of the update. The forums are routinely one of the slowest sites I frequent, and even that comes and goes.

I was seeing that lag long before the updates. In discussions with the other Admins, it seems to be something to do with web server or DB server load balancing. Or evil spirits, I can't remember which. But nothing as egregious as what Spheric Harlot is apparently experiencing. You click, you wait for a bit, then the new page loads. For me that load is really quite fast, just delayed.

Wait, you mean that whenver you have a MacNN page open in one tab, any other page you open in another tab will be ridiculously slow, regardless of what page that is, MacNN or non-MacNN?

I certainly don’t have any of that. MacNN is always a bit slow to load, but it doesn’t affect other pages.

Right now - everything is loading quickly for me in Safari 5.0.4 and Firefox 4.

I get huge delays just moving back and forth. Latest everything, i7 MacBook Pro 13", Just one window open with just this and the "daily" forum search, swiping back and forth using the two-finger swipe on the Magic Mouse.

Swipe - CPU pegs one core (though it switches back and forth between two of the four cores) for seven seconds or so - load.

Oh. Duh.

It was the Safari Restore extension.

Double-Duh.

Pity, as that was actually quite useful.

I assumed that this kind of crap is exactly why Safari did not support extensions.

This one is available via Apple's own portal, no less.

I bet Webkit2 will help in this regard.

How?

Will it stop extensions from affecting the way Safari loads pages?

Or will it just do away with extensions?

Extensions won't have to compete for resources with Safari as a whole, they will be sandboxed, and when backgrounded will be given less of a priority handled by the kernel.

What do you mean by "look"? I was commenting on your ability to switch to another tab without a crazy delay.

It turned out that the delay was unrelated to the MacNN.

It was caused by the SafariRestore extension.

I know, that is what I was commenting on. Extensions are loaded into memory with individual processes in Webkit2, no?

Ah, I see. I don't know.

In this case, the extension was causing a delay in every loaded page - of varying degree.

Keeping them in separate threads, running in parallel to each rendering process also running in its own individual thread, may restore the zippy I see again now that I've disabled SafariRestore.

Which other forums have it?

Various real-world items have prevented me from working on this. And each time I've skimmed the vB support forums, there was no mention of this problem.

So there's no fix in sight because we don't know why it's happening? Can we just filter out the ampersand until we get this fixed?

I think we know why it's happening (at least I do, I'm sure reader does too), but I guess it's a matter of tracing down to problem to its source...

Pretty much this. vBulletin's structure is, to say the least, "complicated." Where the particular borkage is might be extremely difficult to track down, and it is definitely "non-trivial" to address.

I've been doing some Web detective work looking for other boards that have had and fixed this problem, but I haven't found one that says they had it, fixed it, and were willing to share their fix.

I'm pretty sure the "VBScript" they're talking about is MS Visual Basic scripting. Not the PHP vB we use.

The ampersand is stored correctly in DB post entries, so the problem happens on DB retrieval. A text escaping function is coded slightly wrong. All I need is the time to track it down, then compare the file in question with one from the previous version of vB. Or a plugin hook around that point is being used by something incompatible. I've tentatively ruled out vbSEO as the problem, but plan to retest.

Might have time next week.

reader50 has done some hacking, and it seems to have avoided the issue. Please report any resulting weirdness in this thread.
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.
