Lately my friend and I have been hearing about hidden message in songs if you play the track backwards. Since most music is digital and not on vinyl these days, does anyone know of a digital music player that can play songs backwards? I'm sure there must be some editing software that can do it.

Just open the song in Quicktime Player. Turn on "loop back and forth". When it gets to the end it will play backwards.

You can also play in reverse by hitting command-left-arrow. But what these do is play each sample in reverse order, and in the case of audio that's not the same as reversing the whole track (each sample plays forwards within it's own boundaries). I don't know of a way to properly reverse playback of an audio file.

Export as a non-compressed format, possibly AIFF or WAV will work this way. Also, I believe "Amazing Slow Downer" will do this without decoding the MP3.

Best to leave it to the conspiricy theorists though, songs aren't much fun playing backwards unless there's a specific reason to (Boards of Canada is a good reason to, Teddy Bears Picnic and all).

Supposedly there is a hidden message in the Purple Rain Soundtrack. It wouldn't suprise me if there was.

If you have the White Album, listen to Revolution 9 backwards. I don't hear "Paul is dead" anywhere, but it is cool seeing where those some of those sounds came from.

And, to add to the list of songs with backwards messages, I'll start with:

Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust"

Led Zep's "Stairway To Heaven"

Anyone got any others?
