Hi Guys,

My sons iPod Nano (original model) has died. No start up, no power, not even when connected to the mac by USB.

Has it died or is it something simple like a new battery. He does knock it around a bit.

Thanks for the help in advance.

OK. I tried all of the 5 r's and I actually got thr ipod to mount on the computer and itunes recognizes it. I tried to restore but it says that the firmware is damaged.

I have erased the ipod with disk utility but it keeps saying the firmware is damaged.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks.

Does iTunes see the iPod at all? It should (in theory) be able to fix the firmware--unless of course if the part of the firmware that controls updating the firmware is toasted. (I know that's covered in the 5R's, just want to check.)

There should also be an iPod utility to install firmware and so forth (I take that back, I can't see that on the Apple site any more).

Which of the four restore options did you use? I'd suggest 3 or 4 as the best bet.

Thanks dimmer.

I tried to restore from another mac and it worked. I restored the software successfullly.

Now the ipod will connect with any computer and take new songs. Goog.

The clik wheel makes the clicking noises when you touch it but the screen does not work and I can't get it to play music. (pretty hard without a screen i know)

Maybe I just need a new screen?

Yeah, that's a hardware problem. I'd let any Apple Authorized Service Centre or Apple Store take a look. Don't know how much mileage there is to maintain these items though.
