Just upgraded my 8600 to a nice screaming sonnet G4. But now i have this beautiful paperweight of a processor. What even older macs could benefit from this lonely 604e? What is the complete range of models that can take it?

Keep it. You might experience some problems and have to reinstall the original 604e processor, in case you have to send the G3 upgrade for replacement.

Besides you probably won't get much for the card anyway. From what I see on ebay, the 8600 processor card (depending on the model 200mhz or the Mach5 version of the 604e) you'll get about $50 to 150.

Due to a slightly different design (has to do with the L2 cache module), this processor card will not work in the still very popular (PPC 604 and 604e using) 7500/7600/7300 series, but just in the not-so-widespread more high end 8600/9600 series (probably in the 8500/9500 series also, I am not sure).

The 8500 ... 9600 series went from 200 to 350 MHz 604e's, as far as I remember.

There are far more reasons to do so than not.

Do not forget to wrap the card into an anti static bag.
