Oh, so we're getting close. 10bit 1080p 120Hz TV's are now available (with HDMI 1.3), but....
Now that Laptops are starting to get LED backlights, that never wear out and get dimmer like their older counterparts...
When do you expect to see LED backlit LCD HDTV's? Anyone know of any?
(Wow thats a lot of Acronyms....)

TV's what? HDTV's what? Finish your sentence or learn how to use an apostrophe.

I'm getting an HDTV when they give me a better picture than our SD PAL+ 16:9 Sony FD Trinitron.
Maybe a 10bit 1080p 120hz OLED or SED (does that still exist ?) sub $900 32" TV would do.

I'll buy one when they have those specs AND I can get it for $100 at Costco.

SED or OLED is going to beat the pants of any of this tech, if and when it goes public. :/

OLED still has problems with blue burning out too fast. They're making some good progress on it. I love the pixel density with OLED. Should be cool for resolution independent OSes... like Leopard.

My dream HDTV is 32" LCD for watching movies in the internet and for playing Wii eventually. It's only a dream.

Sadly, it's looking like SED will never see the light of day, which is too bad 'cause it had so much promise.

I'm not an english major, so you all just have to put up with my writing style.... Sorry.
Most existing LCD's use CCFL, which over time gets dimmer. LED's don't suffer from this. This (my potential purchase) will be a TV that will be used heavily, and for many years, I don't want to drop $2-4k on something thats going to slowly get dimmer. Projectors and DLP are nice and all, but anyone who's ever owned one knows that over time they get, how to describe this, out of alignment?
That's why I ask about LED backlit TV's. 1080p displays are (all considering) relatively new, but the price for them has dropped really, really fast. All the other features I listed in my first post are great additions to this tech. 120Hz is the "magic" number, since it divides nice with 24 and 30. (yes, I know it's not exactly 24 or 30, but you should know what I'm getting at). 10bit I've just recently looked into, and should provide better color and overall clarity.
OLED has been "just on the horizen" for years, I don't see a 36-46" OLED TV that is reasonable in price anytime soon.
SED seems neat also, but falls in the same boat as OLED.

Those LEDs will currently fail around the time current LCDs lose half their brightness. Just because they don't lose brightness doesn't mean they last forever...

Fair enough, but hopefully repairing something like that won't be too nuts, or, better situation, TV's have decent LED's which don't fail that quick. I mean, these aren't maglite bulbs here....
How expensive is it to replace the CCFL system on a tv usually? (roughly, based on say... a 36-46" tv)

Repairing? You'd have to replace the LEDs. My guess is they'll make the TVs in such a way that you have to buy a new one. There's no money for the manufacturers in the repair...
LED-based TVs will be good, as it will be a more even backlighting and there wont be a "warm-up" period. But it's not going to be leaps and bounds better than what we have now. There's no real reason to wait for them considering they're still at least a year or two away.

I'm only cracking down on apostrophes at the moment. Just stop using them for plural words and I won't comment on the rest.

Nopes, I'ms goings to's writes how's I's writes.
Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo.
(Yes I found this on Digg.)
We just spent $400 getting our 42" Plasma display repaired at work. It had developed big black bars across the screen vertically. So yes, you can fix most any tv.
Oh, and on the never wear out part, I only say this because CRT TV's, like the Sony Trinitron last forever it seems and still look great.

My 27" Sony Wega Trinitron burned out a tuner or something last year. It cost about $150 to fix. I could probably sell that TV for about $100 now if I really tried. And the picture is certainly not as bright as when I bought it. They certainly aren't bullet proof.
