Is there a way to get a Parent Directory type button in the Finder toolbar? Back works for some things, but it's not always what I want.
Any ideas?

There are two options that will allow you to achieve what you want although not entirely exactly what you want. Option number 1 is to add the path toolbar button to your FInder toolbar it's a button with three little horizontal lines on it, I'd post a pic but I'm at uni. 2nd option is to command click on the title of the Finder window and it will also give you the current path allowing you to go up one or more levels. Try Command + Cursor_up. I navigate the file system almost only by command + cursor buttons. It's very convenient.

hmm.. Maybe I'll get a mouse with another button or two...I've already got a Logitech 2 button wheel mouse, and it works nicely.

Oh the drop down menu. I thought you meant like an address bar. My bad.

In column view, you can use the left arrow key for the same task, without a modifier.
Hold it down for a sec, and it'll scroll back to the root level.
