Hi,

I like iMovie a lot, but sound editing is really a pain!

1) Fading out a scene does also fade out the original sound but at the very end (of the transition) there always remains a short and loud blib of the original sound!?

2) To underly music in combination with the original sound is nearly impossible, because there is no way to adjust the sound volume on particular partitions (only overall or with fade in or out!)!

I wonder if someone has a practical solution to these problems (except bying FCP).

Thanks a lot!
(As I said: I like iMovie a lot...)

Hi,

I've been using iMovie for a while. From what I've experienced,

1. You're right about the blip. Either fade in the next scene or put the volume really low or mute.

2. Actually, once you put the music or voice recording in, click on that audio bar and adjust the volume. When you click on the audio for the video (blue bar), the volume slider should adjust back to its original position.

Hope that helps.

Hi,

thanks for your response!

1) I am under the impression that fading in or even muting the following scene does not help, because the problem really lies in the faded out scene!? But I have to check it!

2) My problem is more like this. Assume, I have a long music track and the original sound. At some parts I would like suppress the original sound in favour of the music, in other parts I would like to emphasize on the original sound (e.g. spoken text from the actors) and put the music more in the background. This dynamic balancing is simply not possible!?

Hi,

If I have understood you correctly - then I think it is possible to do what you require although it is hacky and doesn't work perfectly (although it may do if you keep trying).

When recording music hit pause at the point where you wish to change the volume - then hit stop and then hit record again. The track will continue to record at the point you hit pause AND the track will be split allowing you to change the volume of the different sections (see - told you it was hacky).

Although this works I have not yet been able to make a smooth transition between the different parts of the music track.

If this works for you and you can make a smooth transition then pls let me know.

do your sound editing in a 3rd party app like Peak or SoundEdit.

You are right, this could be a solution, but a very static one! As I see it, it is not possible to change these points afterwards!?

bizzare
I thought also about this, but this seems even to be more ponderous! How would you determine the exact point for cutting?

OK. I see there is no simple solution. Nothing on earth is for free and this is also true for a better video editing program.
