Not sure if this has been posted but I recently found out when trying to reinstall OS X on my PowerBook that you can't use discs that come from different Apple computers. I tried using the disc from my new MacBook (which is replacing my 12 inch PowerBook) and it gave a kernel panic when I tried to boot from the MacBook OS X install cd's so I had to dig up my PowerBook install discs.

As you suspect, this has been the norm for a while.

Normally, the installer will tell you that the disc is intended for a different machine. The MacBook disc panicked it because MacBooks use Intel processors, which are completely different from the PowerPC in your PowerBook. Interestingly, while most restore discs are tied to their original hardware, some aren't. The only one I remember of the top of my head is that the eMac restore disc will work on any PowerPC Mac, but I think there are a couple of others.
