This one is driving me nuts!

After zapping the PRAM my G4/533DP (running OS 9.2.2) insists on starting up with the screen resolution set to 640 x 480. However, as soon as the Apple ethernet extension starts to load, the computer switches to the resolution that I set in the "Monitors" control panel. This is most annoying. Suggestions?

Don't look at the screen.

That's interesting. I hadn't heard of that before. I'll give it a shot.

Didn't do anything.

It is so funny. I was having the SAME exact problem. When the happy mac appears, the resolution is BIG and stays that way until the extensions load up. Do you have Virtual PC? I noticed this started to happen when I had a VPC crash( what a shock, but hey, I need to make SVCDS!) If your VPC resoultions are different, you will get prompted by VPC to allow the change. Under VPC settings, make sure set to default ( or something similar) is selected under PC behavior. Then go back to monitors under the apple control panel and re-select your desired resolution. It is probably going to be selected already, but you should switch to a different one, the return. I did that and mine works fine.

Well, I did have VPC. I tried making the changes you suggested and it didn't work. So, I uninstalled VPC and the problem still remains.

Hmmm...

Sorry doc. I am racking my brain right now for an answer. There must be something that is loaded into your start up extension folder that is causing this. Check out that folder.

Happens to me all the time... doesn't bother me.

Switch the settings, boot another partition, zap the PRAM or something.

It just goes away... haven't bothered figuring out how.

Yes, this happens to me also.

It goes a while after a while. Just keep going to the monitors control panel and set the resolution (even if it's already at the right one).

When you're done, shut down the computer.

Keep doing this, the problem will disappear after a while.

Same story here. I've noticed tho' that the correct resolution sticks after a boot into OSX which sits on another HD. I haven't figured out what makes the problem return yet, must be something about installations requiring a restart. Agreed, it's pretty annoying and it's been like this since (I think) 9.0.4 both US English and International versions of MacOS.
